Off topic, Damian, do you really have hard time slapping? I'm just curious because you have world class skills and musical knowledge. When I heard you say that you weren't much of a slapper on Gospelchops, it made me think of a great local player, Zeb Briskovitch, who says he can't slap either (KJung can attest to how great a player Zeb is.)

It's just NEVER felt comfortable to me. Even in college (HUGE Vic fan) I just couldn't get into it. I love the rhythmic possibilities and love what a few folks have done with it, but I wound up taking those ideas and using them finger style. Slapping makes my arm tired!
I do have good tone and time with it and will, occasionally, slap if need be in the studio and it always sounds good in the end, but it's not a "comfort zone" thing for me...
I recently did a Jeff Lorber gig with Marlon McClain on guitar (he played in Pleasure back in the day (KILLIN Portland, OR funk band from the 70's). We played "Glide" (kind of their anthem with a wonderful slap line). I had to do it finger style (but I played it HARD and it sounded as if it were slapped.. I've found ways to approximate it tonally. Still doesn't have the grease in my opinion, tho. I just do what I can!

Just keep doing what you are doing! It is way too easy to get hung up on what doesn't work for you instead of concentrating on what does work. I love your educational work too.
