Check out this video of Manring performing Rylynn with Andy Mckee and Don Ross. His tone is unbelievable.

yeah, it is...pretty typical sweet fretless zon tone, though nice little markbass combo, michael!

Michael Manring is one of those guys who has consistently brilliant tone! Probably my favourite fretless tone, apart from that of Jonas Hellborg on a fretless Wal!

I particularly liked the understated warmth of his playing (not in technical terms, but his sound just makes me think of "warm", kind of soft and comforting). Not going crazy all over the fretboard, just slow, beautiful, melodic lines.

I guess you just can't overstate simplicity sometimes.

What I wondered about that video was if it was an improvisation on Michael's part? I thought that he really added to Andy Mckee's playing, by adding texture and ambiance. It really added a different emotional depth to the song. If you listen to the un-accompanied piece it's a different mood that one gets from it (Andy Mckee kicks a**). Another piece to check out is Michael with Paolo Sereno (Last Train Home Pat Metheny).

One of my favourite tones from Michael is his sound on the Equilbre album he did with David Cullen. Especially on the track "shuffle in", that is exactly what a fretless should sound like imo! Soft and warm, but in a nice way, where clarity is maintained, and so articulate and present! I'm sure he used his custom Sonus on that record, judging by the sound...I'll have to ask him!
