Marcus In Denver first time EVER and KILLER!

Sign in to disble this ad
After being influenced by this man since the earliest stages of my playing, I FINALLY saw him live (fellow TB'er "JRB" was with me and my wife) and it was incredible. The room he played in did not have the best acoustics but the presence of Marcus Miller and the complete command he has over his bass left us in AWE! Get this....no EBS anywhere except the EBS pedal board that was on the floor! He apparently rented an AMPEG 810 and an SVT head (which had black tape over the logo's) and that was what he was playing through. No surprise though...he still sounded like Marcus and I would blame the room for anybody saying his tone wasn't as good as his EBS or SWR tone. He opened with "Run For Cover" and I knew what I was in for the rest of the night..Freakin' KILLER! Of rourse he sported his Old Fender Jazz MOST of the night and had a Fender MM 5-string that he may have glanced at to make sure he didn't knock it over while walking around on stage... But he also played what looked like a custom shop Fender Jazz Fretless with lined Ebony Fingerboard (which he played the whole time for "Come Together") and I thought that was the bass that sounded best and also sat better in the mix. My wife and I met with him after the show (once I got past the drunk lady...yah ) and he was a great guy..very patient with the drunk lady and very humble and friendly to the rest of us. One of the best shows I have EVER been to (out of Many) that feature an amazing bassist (chime in Jonathan). AMAZING bassist, great vocalist too, and very talented on the Bari as well. On a side note, one of the most entertaining highlights of the night was acutally Poogie Bell's "Chicago Bears" light grey T-shirt that after each song got a little darker until eventually completely and I mean completely turning into a dark charcoal grey color...That is certainly a Gatorade endorsement waiting to happen....get some electrolytes in that boy pronto....Awesome drummer though and a great night of music. My fav's were "Run for Cover", "Come Together", and "Frankenstein".

I got to see Marcus Miller live in 2005 with the Headhunters and it was great. I can only imagine how much fun it would be to see him headlining.

You are killing me. I had a very uninspiring gig of my own in Brighton that night and could not go see Marcus. I would like to have been there.

Will, hate to rub it in man but you missed a great show. I was going to try to round up all the TB Denver people for the show but got too busy to do it. Sorry to hear about your gig in Brighton..yikes. I hate when uninspiring gigs ruin great opportunities that could be a once in a lifetime life changing experience when seeing perhaps the GREATEST bassist of all time in a close intimate setting...that sucks
All in good fun man. He will be back (that is what he said about playing in Denver).

That sure was a kickin show Justin.

It is always nice to see a player playing on different gear and still sounding like himself. Like everyone always says it's not the gear, its in the hands. I also loved the tone of Marcus's fretless. It had that full mid present sound while still having that cutting backpickup tone. It's always funny to see a show that is mostly bass players, since all the bass crazy folks (like mayself) end up crowding around the pedal board trying to check out gear, instead of just enjoying the music.

That Fretless KICKED! You were right though JB, it was kind of "Star Trek convention-ish", All bass players (except the drunk lady.. ) and where else in town would you find a bunch of guy's taking pictures of a pedal board?... Can't believe I didn't wear my Marcus Miller Hat that night.... You know a few of those basses that were signed ended up on Ebay.

By the way, apologies for the hijack, but this thread is clearly populated by Denver bass players, so...

I am thinking about working a sub into some of my bar dates with Fina Dupa. The schedule is getting to be a little more than I can handle at some times with my job and two kids under 4.

If you have any interest, there's a link in my sig to a separate thread about that.

I sent you a PM. Hit up JRB as well. One of us (or both) may be able to help you out from time to time. (I have a 4 yr old and some teens, so I know what you got goin' on).
