| So far I have failed to connect with it. A few of his stylistic ventures tend to shy away from my own personal taste (which I mean in no way to suggest that they are bad or wrong), and I do not find myself coming back to the recording instinctively. I do like the "Higher Ground" and "What Is Hip" covers, though.
It occurs to me, however, when I listen to Marcus' solo CDs, that he is making a living doing exactly what the rest of us say we should not do - make every tune into a slap bass showcase. I like my share of the spotlight now and again, but I have to say that I prefer Marcus' collaborations and a few great recordings where he is a sideman to most of his solo material. It's just a little too much of a good thing for me.
I think that "The Sun Don't Lie" is still my favorite of his solo works. Is that the one with the fewest covers? Hmm. |
