Marcus Miller Style

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys. I love the sound of Marcus' style. It is so distinct. I know people say it is his bass and etc, but what about his style? I love how its not filled with so many notes. He plays jsut enough of notes and leaves room to breathe. Can we do a little "analyzing" of what he does that makes his sound and solos so distinct. Like his patterns, riffs, (especially his muted notes) and feel. I am a big fan of his and although imitaiting can be a bad thing, learning from a master is an exellent place to start. Can anybody help me with this project?

He said he's always trying to emulate Steve Wonder and his phrasing when he's working on melodies.
And he's thinking first rithmically and then being melodic on top of that rithm.
IMO.

I personally enjoy all of Marcus Miller's work he is an excellent MUSICIAN his bass playing is amazing and his songs are musically great, and he produces and scores for movies, great musician. I personally LOVE his side man work Check out Spyro Gyra's "Incognito" "City Kids" also check out Luther Vandross's debut ( I believe) album "Never Too Much" Great playing on that one funk-ay. He (Luther) and Marcus were friends and would bump into each other often in the New York session scene and Luther wanted to start his own group and get known for his singing, yet producers were reluctant to sign him because he SANG and did'nt have a gimmicky look and performance. Also Marcus said Luther was one of the first people he met that treated their voice as an instrument and practiced it as such.

Also, check out Most of Miles Davis's later work "Man with the horn" and "TUTU" and all those greats. I also beleive Marcus worked with Aretha Franklin and David Sanborn. Just check out his discography tons of good music.

I don't know if you heard this all and that's why you like him or if you've only mostly heard his solo ,like most people.

Marcus has an excellent website and is good about answering questions. Also a lot of good players hang out at his site too. I would say it would be worth your while to check it out.

Not as an official member but he played on several recordings back in the day! Scott Ambush has been the man since 1991!
