Another chapter in the Roots bass chair, he looks like a killer player.

I would love to be a chapter in that bass chair Questlove is one of those drummers very high on the list of drummers I'd like to play with.

I suspected Owen had left the band when I saw them in London a few weeks ago. Owen wasn't playing with the group then and Black Thought made a joke at some point during the show about how the sousaphone player didn't leave the band when they were going on tour.

I think that's a sign.

Personally I liked both Hub & Mr Biddle, both very very different players.
Each dude brought his own thing the The Roots.
I see Kelley doing ther same thing, adding his own voice to the Roots thang....

Thank god!

Owen's indie-pop-rock inspired bass tone/lines weren’t doing it for me.

Obviously every player is different and will bring something different to the table but in my opinion he did not fit in well with The Roots’ vibe… at all.

Seeing them live was hilarious; you had the whole crew grooving out on stage and then one random guy in full on rock stance.

His production work on Game Theory wasn’t too shabby.

Anyway, maybe a bit of jealousy (he had my dream job) and prejudice against indie kids (even though they’re so darn annoying!) but I’m glad to see him go.

Can’t wait to see what Kelley has in store!

Anyone know what Hub is up to these days?!

IMO Biddle was just very different than Hub.

I am curious to know what indie-pop-rock vibe you were getting from Owen, preferably with examples. I've worn "Wake Up" by The Roots and John Legend out, and I don't hear it.

Meanwhile, this Michael Kelly video sounds terrible. I wonder why they didn't pick something where you can hear the bass better. The guys are killin though.

Wow, had no clue he left the group. Biddle is definitely one of my favorite modern R&B/Hip-Hop bassists. Heard them live back in the Jazz festival back in '08 and I'm still trying to cop some of his live tones. Hope this new guy is just as good...

Biddle

Wow, didn't know this either. I am currently still listening to Booker T with the Roots and Biddle has some pretty good stuff going on.

+1 on Biddle looking out of place. I caught them at Universal Studios back in March and when all the guys were trying to move in unison, he looked like a fish out of water. Definitely a great bassist though.

+2 Owen kinda always made chuckle when he was doing his off time head nod thing. I'm getting mental pictures now and starting to laugh. That being said, I was a huge Hub fan and didn't like it when he left. Owen did a great job holding that bass spot down. The new guy is already starting to grow on me. Hope he keeps the gig.

Holy $h*t! I had no idea. I really just discovered him a few months ago. He is a monster with an really original voice on the instrument. Innovative stuff! Unfortunately I'm not sure that voice really fit that well in The Roots.

For anyone who has not checked out his band Mister Barrington, do yourself a favor and take a listen.

Mark Kelley play/tours with Meshell Ndegeocello. I saw him with her last year. This is a recent vid. He has held the bass chair with her for a while now.
