The tone...

Gearwise: A precision bass through an Ampeg SVT.
The bass he used the most, I think, is a Sandberg 5-string precision with added humbucker at the bridge.
Almost all the Helloween classics are recorded with the Sandberg I think.

He also has been spotted sometimes with a Jazz Bass, but I'm assuming that's not his main thing.

Playing wise....

Practice, practice, practice
Markus is known for using every possible technique in metal.

I'm thinking about learning "Take Me Home" myself, because I think that is his greatest bassline.
It wont be easy.

Markus rulezzzzzzzzzzzzz, btw.

edit;

Recently he started playing Yamaha basses.
I think he got endorsed by Yamaha, but I'm not sure. He promotes Yamaha though.
I haven't seen any good pics, but I think Yamaha TRB.

Thanks man! I actually play a five string. My favorite bass lines by Markus are probably Keeper of the Seven Keys, Halloween, King for A thousand years, and Rise and Fall (which is extremely fun to play! WALKING BASSLINES GALORE!)

I could be wrong about what bass he used the most.
I know he uses precision style basses, he even has a telecaster precision style bass with splitcoil pickup and humbucker pickup at the bridge.
But I can't find much information on his gear.

I really love the tone and playing in Take Me Home. I'd like to know how he achieved that.
Also that dub-like sound in Mr. Torture, it's so low, well rounded yet clear and fast attack.

He definately is a great inspiration to me, especially as a metal bassist.
And with his latest project Bassinvaders I am stunned by the greatness of this man.

I saw Helloween once... but I didn't pay attention to Markus' gear. But the sound was awesome.
Also: I was topped up on dark Grimbergen and was chanting along on an extended 20 minutes version of Future World in the pouring rain.

Ah, good times.

I wish Markus was a member of this board. I would have a hundred of questions for him.

I've seen an old video of them where Markus used a vintage BC Rich Eagle bass.

that must've been from back when it was the Kai Hansen/Michael Weikath/Markus Grosskopf/ Ingo Schwitenberg line up.

So far, these are the basses I know he uses:

Sandberg 5 string
P Bass
P/J bass
J Bass
Spector NS 2
