| | | | Markus Miller's Latest Post "I ran into Robert Trujillo and Armand Sabal-Leco at a restaurant in LA. Robert ran back home and brought back Jaco Pastorius' "Bass of Doom" for me to check out. Pretty cool." [Marcus Miller on Facebook]
Can someone please tell me the whole story? I read somewhere Trujillo found Jaco's bass but why did he bring it to Marcus?

I also read on the internet that he uses the bass onstage, although I think he would use a replica custom shop version if he is not out of his mind. Marcus also uses the jaco pastorius signature model as his fretless bass so maybe Trujillo new about it and wanted Marcus to give it a try, Or he was just showing off.. |

| | | | I bet Trujillo paid lots of money to have Jaco's bass. Still I thought he would give it to Jaco's sons!

| | Registered User Endorsing Artist: MXR Devices, Jim Dunlop Strings | | | | | Greetings, gentlemen. If I may interject here, I'd like to post a pic and tell a teeny bit of my experience with this.
Last year, Robert asked me to be interviewed for the Jaco movie he's involved with. Of course I agreed.
I drove down to the illustrious Fillmore where he was conducting his interviews. I met and watched Anthony Jackson interviewed. Nice, smart fella. Obviously.
Robert disappeared while the director set up my shot to drive Anthony back to his hotel and 'get a present'.
As the 30-minute interview drew to a close, Robert popped back in and stood by the camera, smiling all the while (he's a happy fella).
I finished and he said "hey, check this out" and he pulled out Jaco's bass.
I have a pic of Robert and I 'playing' it (I'm trying to upload it but the TB server is giving me a 500 error. Yes, it's under 2mb) Right before this, I'd mangled "Donna Lee" (which I'd 'practiced' for a couple of minutes the night before... more like took it out of the mothballs and shook it out, rather than 'play' it.) right on this bass. It was historical/hysterical. Felt pretty good.
As far as I am able to discern, Robert has taken care of the family and the pawn-shop owner, and to my knowledge, all are happy with the arrangement. |

He paid for it, no?
It's not like he'd give it "back" anyways since they never owned it in the first place.

He has sole possession of it, and has an agreement with the family to never sell it - I think they technically own it. Likewise, they have access to it if they want, but they can`t just take it home for the weekend. As it was, the family didn`t have the scratch to buy it when it was rediscovered. Rather than it falling into unknown hands, Trujillo snapped it up and voluntarily made the arrangement with the family. Class act, imo.

Rather long story about him and the bass. Good reading.

Class act for sure. | Thank you for bringing Infectious Grooves up. So many people only know him now for being in Metallica, but I cannot state how impressive this guy is on the bass. He gave Les Claypool a good run for his money in the days when Les was revered like God. |

The Pastorius estate technically still owns it as Robert states he won't keep it he just currently possesses it.
Why did he bring it to Marcus? I dunno, maybe cus he is a bass player? Who wouldn't die at the chance to play that bass? Let alone a guy who was so heavily influenced by Jaco people initially wrote him off as a clone... |

Yes, instruments are made to be played but in this case I take exception. It's a shame that Jaco's bass had been refinished and not in original condition. I am glad however that it's whereabouts are known now and in the hands of someone with a Fort Knox type of vault to keep it safe. As for Robert's "class act" persona, I think he was more humble and fan friendly before Metallica fame got to his bank account...er, head. Just sayin'...

| | | any one else think Trujillo is being wasted in Metallica? I really want another Infectious Grooves album Pretty awesome he has the bass, i remember reading about 2 years ago in Bass Player that it was found by some other guy, and Victor Wooten and Victor Bailey and someone else got to play it that time to(wasn't Trujillo). Wonder how he managed to get in before the other guys.lol |

But I still don't get why the family would have a right or claim to that bass.
Well... never mind.
