Is there any Mendez and Opeth fans out there?
If so, what do you like with his playing and tone?
Any dislikes?

I like his phrasing and note choice on many songs, especially Windowpane, Bleak, several parts of Still Life as well.

However I never really thought his choice of Fender bass fit well with Opeth. He could be an endorsing artist and have a choice of several other makes that I think are superior. but I've never really liked Fender insruments personally anyway.

yeah, defenitely love Opeth, one of my favorite bands and favorite bassists. Mendez is perfect for the band and is the entire reason they retain the groove that they do while being so classical prog metal. His tone is very clean and precise and maintains a large presence in the music. It's not exactly what I want to do myself but I think it's perfect for the band.

Exactly my thoughts.

And I just turned on Ghost Reveries...his lines are so tasteful.

Besides Steve Harris, one of my favorite metal bassists. Plays with a clean tone, is super audible in the mix whether live or on recordings. A perfect example of filling a sonic niche where none of the other instruments reside. Proves you dont have to have that distorted middy bottomless tone that so many metal bassists seem to love and results in them sounding like a crappy, definitionless guitar. If you get to see them live, dont miss it!

I love that he finds ways to incorporate slap into death metal. Great overall player IMHO.
