Marvin Gaye&James Jamerson...

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm watching Marvin Gaye(Live in Concert1961-1979)on "VH-1 "Classic"...and he's in concert playing "What's Going On",and the "Hook"(James Jamerson...)is playing bass for him. His "walking" bass sure sounds good. I bet Marvin Gaye has the "best" playing for him,on that gig.

Best DVD for viewing The Hook

Thanks for the heads up, SX!

This brings up a good question...does anyone know what the best Marvin Gaye DVD is for viewing James Jamerson in action?

There are a couple to choose from (based on what I saw on Amazon) and I was wondering if anyone has any good input on which one is a must have.
Thanks

Notice he is playing out of a Fender Dual Showman. I have one of those back in 1968. Two 15" JBL speakers. But the back of the cabinet would buzz badly if I played loud. But it sounded great if you didn't push.

A lot has been said about Jamerson using a B15, but obviously not here. Note that at Motown, the bass always went direct. In fact, so did all the guitars. There were no amps in that studio at all.

Direct guitars, can you believe that?

I've read that he played a blue sparkle Kustom with 2 15's at larger live gigs. A Fender is a lot more respectable looking though, especially on TV.

I thought I spotted his B15 behind him, and those Fenders were for an unseen guitar player. (?)

Best clip on youtube - there's no contest. Now, where's the rest of that concert's footage?

I see that "This live performance comes from the long out-of-circulation 1973 film, "Save The Children"".

Anybody have any more info on STC?

Are there more tracks from that show on the DVD?

By the way, are all the track live or are there a few variety show lip synched performances?
