Dude, some of Whitney's tunes are iconic Pop tunes that connect with many many many many people around the planet... that's more than "a gig's a gig".
and "hope" it pays well, ya, I think Matt's gonna have a profitable 2010

People have to understand, Whitney is different than alot of these current pop artists. Not only was she iconic, people loved her enough to hold out while she was going through her problems and always wish her well. Shes never lost many of her fans, they were just waiting for her to get better lifestyle wise, unlike alot of others that were easily written off.

He ought to be able to afford a few more Foderas if the tour is successful!

Being admired by chopmeisters and arcane musical geeks is fine and good, but playing in front of a CRAP LOAD of people who have so fallen in love with Whitney will probably be an incredible rush/challenge. Further proof that if you stay open-minded you can be a flashy soloist AND a working meat-and-potatoes player. |

Will he get paid that much, though. I have heard some awful stories(from the musicians themselves) about big names getting 6 figures for shows but paying their sidemen $500 a gig. |

The musicians who play for the very big names who settle for $500 a gig, is because that's what they choose to settle for.
Gigs with very big name artist usually make 20 times more than that a week and in some cases they can bring in between 5-10K a night.

One thing a lot of kats need to know. Musicians are nothing more than props to a lot of artists.
A lot of times the artist doesn't even rehearse with the band and will perform with the band for the first time when the artist is announced to come out on stage. There are artist who on most occasions will not even speak to the musicians in the band under no circumstances and some times that includes no eye contact. |

One rap/hip hop artist in particular has been in the news this week for reasons other than music, doesn't pay his backing musicians that well. |

Not to mention of course that a Whitney Houston tour looks pretty darn great on the resume. I'm sure those younger cats (and I can totally see what you mean on that looking at most backing musicians) look at it as a great exposure gig. Then again, even if you were making 500 a show, I"m sure with a bigger name you'd be playing at least 100 shows or more a year. For a kid used to playing in bars that would seem pretty great at first.
I'm curious to know what type of networking you'd have to have to even be considered for a gig like this. Apparently Matt's is pretty rock solid, to have scored such a 'meat and potatoes' sideman gig (Whitney baby, you need my number?) while being primarily known for being a fusion-y/jazz guy. |

Take a look at the musicians who play with him and take a look at how fast the musician chairs changes in his camp. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
