The electronica blend to his chordal approach is very fresh imho. His use of surround sound pushes the envelope of the cd listening experience and I believe it will play a more prominent role in the future of his recordings. In a few years people will emulate his techniques very well (if not sooner), but I would be surprised if bassists will speak as much as Matt does in his compositions. He runs the whole gambit in Shapeshifter and if you do not own it, buy it. I especially dig the nearly minimalist approach on "Three Tree" there is a simple chord progression with ripping solos around it, cool stuff. |
