hey fellow TBers!

i didnt know if this would be the right section, so any mod - please move this if its wrong

i also have to face that quest for "the tone in my head" i know quite exactly what i want.

anybody here knows matt wong? former bassist of reel big fish.

his sound/tone is exactly what im looking for! u can hear it very well in the last 50-60 seconds of this vid when they are just talking!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW1cL...elated&search=

its a bit punchy an has an emphasis on the lows i think. altough the highs can be heard quite well on other songs of RBF!

i tried to find out how to tweek my EQ to get as close to that sound but wasnt very lucky. i hope u guys can help me to find the EQ settings i need to get this tone! i dont have ANY effects cause im a poor student (this obviously doesnt cure me from GAS though)

ive got a

passive fender jazz bass MIA special edition (2000)
daddario chromes (i could afford some roundwounds if they are needed for the tone)
marshall amp - combo: bass state B150 (pic: http://www.elfa.com.au/product_image...all/70b150.jpg)
i got KNOBS for: gain, blend, treble, bass, compression - buttons for: bright, deep, earthlift, limiter
and an EQ from 40hz to 8Khz

i hope u guys can help me! thx in advance!

------

offtopic: if u have time and the will... could u explain to me what the blend+compression knobs and the earthlift and limiter buttons on my amp are for? i bought it from a friend of my fatherwho didnt have any booklet for it. i looked at the official marshall page but there was nothing listed. Thank you!

Looks like he's playing a EBMM Sterling to me.. could be a Stingray too. The tone reminds me more of my Sterling than a Stingray. Other than that, it sounds pretty straightforward.

Stingray 5 w/ Ampeg is the classic Matt Wong sound. I couldn't help any more than that, though.

I'm PRETTY SURE he uses GHS boomers. I could be mistaken.

He uses a Red Stingray 5 with an Ampeg, as stated earlier.

I think he uses some pick, some finger, some slap technique.

Just a shot in the dark, try turning the bright on, with the lows up, and the compression down a little bit to give it a bite.

If you like him, I'm sure you've heard "Everything Sucks" by Reel Big Fish. What I would do is just listen to the beginning part of the song, and just try to tweak your tone as close as you can get it.

Sorry to say it, but a Jazz wont get that tone. If you want the exact tone, try a Stingray

Matt Wong Tone

I know he uses a Musicman Stingray 5 string with a Piezo pickup in the bridge, Ernie Ball Strings, and in the "Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album" you can see, although it's a bit dim, that he's using an SWR head. The cab looks to be about the size of an 8x10 (Megoliath, Ampeg?), but he has a flag hanging in front of it so I'm not sure. I have an Ampeg SVT 3-PRO and an Ampeg 4x10 HLF and I can get a tone similar to his with a passive Mexican Fender Jazz Bass, Ernie Ball Slinkys, and the head with the "LOW BOOST" and "BRIGHT" buttons on. Hope to be helpful, i love his tone also!
