Matt Garrison was going to be on Jimmy Herring's summer tour and I have been gearing up for this for like a month! Sadly, he dropped off and now some other guy (whose name is currently escaping me) is taking over.
Bust. What a let down. It's still going to be rad to see Herring playing with Jeff Sipe and Scott Kinsey but I wanted Matt to sign my finger ramp! |

| | | | It won't be the same. It will probably be better. I love Garrison but he's not a very good fit for Herring's music. I have a board recording of the 3 shows that Matt was supposed to be part of that featured music from his Improvision trio with Sipe and Machecek(sp?). Matt bailed on it because he got a better paying gig overseas so they got Fountain. I actually preferred Neil on that stuff. He seems to be a more groove oriented player more in the style of Oteil and I just thought his style and tone worked better in a trio format than Garrison's. I saw the Herring show a few times with Oteil on bass and it was incredible. Oteil is really the only player for this gig. I feel bad for those of you who won't be able hear the music with Oteil. What's interesting is the bass player they talked about getting after Matt pulled out and before they went with Fountain. Gary Willis! That could've been cool. |

I'll buy records just for a particular bassist.Same thing with lame movies with say 1 great actor/performance.

Neal Fountain (Bruce Hampton, Alex Machacek, Jeff Sipe) will be performing this Summer instead of Matthew Garrison . Matt could not play this summer due to unforseen circumstances
Bassist Neal Fountain made his performing career debut at the age of 14 and since then has left his mark performing throughout the nation with Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton and the Fiji Mariners, Jeff Sipe, Bobby Lee Rodgers, international indie-jazz emsemble Kenosha Kid, and Austrian guitar prodigy Alex Machacek. Fountain leads the Atlanta based trio Megaphone Man, which in 2001 was named "Best Jazz Band" in the Atlanta metro area by Creative Loafing and in 2006 was invited to headline at the Berlin Jazz Festival. Fountain’s many talents put him at the top of a short list of musicians in the Athens area who at a drop of a hat can deliver solid creative work live or in the studio.

If it was a difference of say a grand or so, yeah Garrison should play what he was committed to. But I think the difference was something closer to 50 or 60 grand. I can't blame the guy for that. The Herring thing is a personal thing he's going through. Can't blame him for that either. |

The second trio that Alex Machacek did with Sipe had Fountain on it, there's a great CD of a live they did in NC. The first one was with Garrison on bass (resulting in the album: Improvision). Neal is up there as one of my favorite bassists and I feel that not enough cats know about him, but should. His use of chordal playing, tasteful phrasing and just over all groove will get many cats on TB raving about him. He is one of the real monsters!
Here are some shots I took, last time I caught Machacek/Sipe/Fountain, last fall:
And a shot of Neal with ATL guitar great Steve Cunningham: | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
