Who is the best on their instrument? They are very similair on the other departments. Both are lead singers, lead writers and mulit instrumentalist.

But how do the compare if we gonne look on the bass skills?

I would rate them equal. Both wrote great songs! Both sing well. Both play other instruments well. I give Paul the edge in the money/assets dept. Sting does have a more progressive (sorta jazzy) approach to writing. He also doubles on upright. Paul is pure 'pop'. I like them both.

I once read where Sting called Sir Paul "The Guv'nor". That pretty much tells you right there.

If you think Paul's lines are boring, try playing and singing "I Saw Her Standing There". Or try the bassline from "Come Together" or "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". You might gain a new respect!

Sting FTW

Sting's bass parts (back in the day) often had that reggae feel which is way tough to sing over. Plus, he gets bonus points for using Christian McBride on his live album! Also... the guy rolls tantric style.
I think the biggest differences are:
A) Sting is a much better lead singer.
2) Sting is an amazing song writer. Paul is a song writing deity.

Which is better ... apples or oranges?

Both are top notch as players with their own distinctive styles however, there's no escaping the fact that Sir Paul essentially wrote the book on how to play rock bass.

Sting through and through. Great player, Great voice, And his songs are so hard to play singing and playing at the same time. Damn Syncopation and playing after beats.

Sting uses an old Fender P bass.

Concerning the topic, I wouldn't say any one is better than the other, I think both are extremely talented singers and bassists. However, I like McCartney's music and basslines more tha Sting's. I haven't got into the jazzy stuff Sting likes to play sometimes lately....although Police was great.

Sting's used a bunch of different basses thru his career- from Steinbergers, I believe a Spector (the white one he used on the Synchronicity tour) but he always comes back to the Fender tho I'm not really sure if it's a P (Jaguar??)
I prefer Sting. His lines are subtle, but right there in the pocket. My only wish is that they'd turn him up in the mix both on the records and live.

? Both are very good bass players with a keen understanding of the kinds of music they play, surely that's all that matters. The bass slot for Sting's solo stuff (as in post-Police) was taken up by the likes of Christian McBride and Daryl Jones anyway.

McCartney's lines were more melodic and just more tasteful to me...he had soooo many memorable bass lines.

An interesting question. My view of Paul is that his bass lines tend to be little songs in their own right and as such have sometimes become downright iconic (the riff in paperback writer, daytripper and most of sgt pepper)

Pauls stuff grooves because of the way it fits orchestrally with the tune itself.

Sting on the other hand, writes really inventive lines but definitely more "goove oriented" in the traditional sense of the term. It is sort of "apples and oranges" when I think about it.
