I have been learning to play Hole's Celebrity Skin I find it quite a dirty bassline

I looked up the bassist who recorded the song/album and ound out she also played with a few other bands I liked including The Smashing Pumpkins

Curious who else gets into this bassist and if you can recommend any of the better songs?

She released an album a year or two ago.

You can check out her stuff here:

I used to like her until she released a solo album. Not a good singer. Better than Courtney Hole, but that ain't saying much.

She is a cool chick and a fellow Canadian. Her dad is a heavy duty gov't diplomat or something as I recall.

BTW.... her voice is brutal IMO after listening to her solo record but the is a pretty good bassist.

I think you have her mistaken with Kathleen Edwards. I think her father is in journalism, but I may be wrong.

Melissa Auf der Maur was born in1972 in Montreal, Canada. She was born to Nick Auf der Maur, a well-known journalist and politician and Linda Gaborieau, Montreal's first female rock DJ. Auf der Maur was raised in Montreal and was a photography student at Concordia University, but left in 1994 to join the band Hole (fronted by Courtney Love) after a recommendation from Smashing Pumpkins bassist Billy Corgan. In addition to playing bass guitar and singing, Auf der Maur plays piano and trumpet.

Melissa Auf der Maur

Auf der Maur left Hole in 1999 and toured with the band Smashing Pumpkins until 2000. Between 2000 and 2004, she worked on various projects with other groups until her solo debut, released in the summer of 2004, called Auf Der Maur.

I love Melissa, I saw her live and her Precision/SVT setup was like a punch in the gut... I went back to my old Fender soon after. Active electronics be damned!

So, she was very inspirational to me. She has a beautiful, vulnerable singing voice but very headstrong at the same time. Her album's very moving, roll on the next one.

She is an interesting musician, I tend to have a hard time taking her seriously because well she played for Hole.

If I remember correctly Nick Auf Der Maur was the representative for NDG ( notre-dame de grace) in the mid to late 90's.
I remember thinking it was funny as hell when Mellisa joined Hole since dad was a big-shot municipal or provincial politician. (can't remember which)

To go back on the subject I haven't heard Melissa's album but I did hear her first single, "Taste me". I thought it was fantastic. The french version was better than the english too IMO.

Thumbs up

I think she kicks ass. She played great live with the Pumpkins and some of her solo stuff isn't bad.

I like her solo album. She's not a powerhouse singer, but she's got a vibe that I like. The cover to that CD is one of my favorites.

I always thought that she was in the pumpkins longer than what that article said, and that she was in hole earlier.

A good pickstyle player but nothing out of the ordinary, IMO.

I went to her site and watched a couple of clips of her tunes. I was impressed, I liked them alot more than I thought I would. She is also not hard on the eyes.

Holy Super bump

http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=...b-a38296fa6f65

I remember seeing hole around 12 years ago, alright hearing them from the campsite at the festival and being astounded at how good the bass player sounded. Absolutely nothing fancy but a very definiate P-bass with a pick simple that was just gut wrenching and so so tight. Now I know who it was, I'm a fan.
