Over here they were massive with teenage girls - we're talking almost Beatlemania levels of hysteria wherever they went.
I always knew they could play and was a fan, even though I couldn't admit it at the time as they were extremely uncool - see previous sentence!!.
I even tried to get my Band to do "Going Home" - I even bought the sheet music (the real one with the picture on the front): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSdrETgBD3M
I thought it rocked (still do), but because it was by the Osmonds they thought I was joking !!.
Donny was on a talk show a year or so ago and told the story of when they toured Germany soon after Crazy Horses came out. They arrived at a venue with their matching suits, dance routines and "Puppy Love" and the audience consisted of Bikers expecting the rock band that played "Crazy Horses" and more of the same!!.
I used to tell girls that "I played the same Bass Guitar (Fender P) that Merrill did". They never seemed too impressed :-(.

The Music Biz and Radio in the States wouldn't even listen to it. It's just hard to be taken seriously once you've been a Teen Idol. It's amazing that Michael Jackson was able to transform himself as an adult. |

In all honesty, that's where I learned the trick about jumping Channel I into Channel II with a patchcord on a Marshall #1959 plexi head ...from a picture of Donny Osmond.

Of course this album (and a few others) never saw the light of day when my friends were around. Had an image to keep up, after all. |

I think the Osmonds could have been just as successful if they had broken their goody goody image. That video still showed the novelty aspect of them. They just weren't being taken seriously! At least here in the states. |

He's standing/dancing there singing lead vocals for the first parts of the verses!!! FWIW, when I recorded and played live with them in the mid-70's, their amps were always turned down . . . Jay DID play drums on some tunes . . . he's quite capable . . . Quote:

I remember that at every show they did an a capella arrangement that was the highlight of the concerts FOR ME!
They had several to choose from, all Four Freshman-type close harmony in 5 (or 6) voices . . .

Quite the challenge for the marketing/A&R folks I'm sure, and they were either branded too soft or cute via "Puppy Love" displays of emotion, or accused of copying the Jackson 5.
Similar critical fates fell on the J5 themselves, Cowsills, DeBarge, DeFrancos, and many more talented musical families. A lot of folks can't get past the gimmick aspect. Kinda sad.

Off The Wall was a masterful piece of art from the artist to the songwriting and production! If Rod and Quincy could have gotten together with the Osmonds......who knows what may have transpired!?! |
