Cool Me'Shell NdegéOcello Gear

Sign in to disble this ad
Does anybody know what basses Me'Shell NdegéOcello uses? I believe Fender Jazzes, passive with old strings, am I right? But what years / models / RIs ? What amps?
I think that most of her tone comes from the dead strings (and from her hand, indeed )
Any other infos?
I found this pic on her myspace page:

Looks pretty recent to me, or?
I guess this is her main bass, isn't it?

Thanks !

I remember reading somewhere that she uses a 60's J Bass strung with roundwounds. But I may be wrong.

She was using a Sukop back in the day when I saw her. I've seen clips with that old J, and also with a custom Fodera.

Seems like she is only using the J lately.

She was using Modulus Vintage J, vintage Fenders jazzes, once even Gibson Les Paul bass, last year a strange Fodera (1 tuning key up, and 3 downwards) but you always recognize her.
She used different amps, from Eden to Sunn, in studio Aguilar DB680 pre. Once I've seen her SVTII Pro head with that pro 4x10 ampeg cab. (Once I've seen her by anger crashing her Fodera bass, becouse the Ampeg head was crappy and distorting. )Nowadays she is with Vintage Ampeg SVT with refridgerator vintage Ampeg cabs.

I forgot about the Les Paul, which is featured on the Mellencamp 'Wild Nights' video.

And she's got atleast one Celinder as well as a Fender (Japan, I think) Jazz with maple fretboard and black blocks, no pickguard mounted. There used to be some vids of her playing those (Celinder-GodFearMoney, Fender-Loyalty), but I think they've been taken down now.

I think maybe the Surine is what I meant when I mentioned Sukop. Is the Surine the model with that very large symmetrical body, almost like a big Ken Smith?

There is a mysterious story behind what happened to the Celinder, but word is that she didn't sell it. It ended up back at the Celinder shop for a while, before being spotted at the London store.

Most recent videos will show her playing her early 60s Jazz Bass. I saw her in concert about 3 years ago at the Detroit Institute of Arts and she played that Modulus. Oddly enough, she said she didn't like that bass and was only playing it because her Jazz was in the shop. I spoke with her backstage (completely star struck was I) and she mentioned the Fodera that had just been made for her, and that it was neck heavy. She was asking if there was a way to attach the strap to the headstock to avoid neck dive. Then the funniest thing happened when she was trying to articulate the kind of bass that wasn't passive, but had a battery in it, and my friend said, "You mean active", and she said, "Yes, active!". That's a true story. I don't think she is at all tech minded, just super musical.

I have also seen her play a red Stingray (you can actually hear that bass on her first record), a Marcus Miller Jazz, and a Warwick Corvette.

She's definitely used a variety of basses over the years.

When I saw her last year in Chicago, she was playing the vintage Fender Jazz that's pictured above. IIRC, it's a '65. Her amp was an Ampeg SVT with a 4X10 cabinet.

I took a picture of her rig that night, but I can't seem to locate it right now. I will post it in this thread when I find it.

i realise Meshell is a wonderful musician, who is really discovering other musical avenues, but i really wish she would go back to the stuff i loved her for in the first place......

Peace Beyond Passion is one of my favorite all time albums.... funk and soul in her unique sound...

im not saying record similar stuff which has gone before, but make it funky again... i want to say i like her new stuff, but in a different way, and thats true...but her new stuff just doesnt hit me in my soul like the older albums....

come home Meshell!!!!
