Meshell Ndegeocello.........

Sign in to disble this ad
I posted this on a musicians forum and interestingly... got quite a negative response, I think this lady is extremely talented as an all round musician and have done for quite a few years now....Never really thought of her as just a bass player(more of a musical arranger,as she plays all sorts)......Maybe its just this particular clip??

One poster said that she brings nothing new to the table. I happen to think she is one of the most original musicians working today...Damn fonky too!!...What do you guys/girls think..

Another thing is i have never particularly thought of her as a woman oddly enough. Just a musician..

I don't understand anyone saying she brings nothing new to the table. I think she is a distinctive musician. I can definitely tell her bass playing. That enough for me. I have enjoyed her from the beginning.

I don't find that clip interesting at all - 1:14 of a (very old) one bar groove?!
I am a HUGE fan of hers, though, of her as a bassist, singer and songwriter. Playing fingerstyle, she can outgroove any other player I can think of. There's a clip of God.Fear.Money. on there that's just impossibly funky.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F-VArHYOWI

when Robben Ford says 'She is taking R&B to new heights' you just gotta believe him right???
I think she's great, as a bassist and vocalist.

99 out of every 100 who put down a player like that aren't half as good themselves.

I'm a big fan!

I've got at least a dozen live shows of hers as well as most her studio releases.

One of my favorite Meshell vids

Meshell is the bomb.

How about Robben and Meshell playing together?

IMHO,
meshell has two types of fans/followers/people who know her...people who know her as an amazing musician, and those who think she's hot and sexy.

and when those two signals get crossed, people start talking smack about her.
case in point: on her last tour, folks were walking out of her shows. why? 'cause they wanted "sexy" meshell, not "amazing musician" meshell. hence the disclaimer that had to accompany her shows (i.e. no vocals).

me, i'll listen to meshell any way she chooses to make music.

Most the shows I download come from these 3 sources. I cannot vouch for the legitimacy of the recordings, I do know that they maintain a 'black list' of artists that do not openly allow taping of shows.

She's one of the most significant and talented contemporary musical figures in my opinion.

She's one of the few who can slap funk and still sound cool doing it.
Not all the bippity bippity double stuff passing as funk these days.

I'm not too hip on her rap/lyrical stuff either.

I prefer her playing with her sextet. Check out this video of her at the Montreux Jazz Festival:

http://r.bluewin.ch/?id=48859 (1:39hr long / Require Real Player).

The intro is some DJ guy so it takes a few minutes for the band to come up.. HOT show though!!

One of my favorites! Her 'Dance Of The Infidel' album was on my best-of-list from last year. Besides being such a badass herself she also surrounds herself with other smokin' bassist and players. Like a lot of true artist, she doesn't seem to get stagnate, she changes it up from album to album. People fear change, that's why I think some people don't dig her. It's their loss.

I don't know about that, because I never heard Robben Ford in and R&B setting ( only in a jazz and a real progressive blues setting),but that's not to take away her great composing ability, and great bass playing.
