My company had a private party, and Lyle Lovett was the band, and look who turns out to be on bass but the Legend himself.
I met him afterward and he was super nice.
I asked him some questions,...first not sure the name of his bass but it was a 5 string with fanned frets and sounded amazing (see clip: Lyle Lovett - Lights Of LA County - YouTube)
He said that he puts mandolin frets on it because those are the smallest you can get and makes it sound almost like a fretless. He had 2, 1 wood finish the other metallic blue, he chose the wood for the country type gig!
That led me to mention that 3 years ago I purchased genuine 1962 Jazz bass (yes slab!) and that is was the most incredible bass i've ever played, and he said that Leo really nailed it from the get go. He said that he's played all the new toys at the NAMM shows and that nothing sounds as good as an old (pre CBS) fender with a killer Ampeg rig.
Anyways, just thought I'd pass along this note that he's a cool dood and btw he was rippin it up with the ex Mr Julia Roberts. |

Lee Sklar is a hero for sure.
Got to hang with him after a show with James Taylor years ago.
Very funny, and smart fellow.

I passed on the show because I had already seen him 4 times in this venue. I had the night off, I would have definitely gone if I knew these two were with him! They should have put their names on the marquee. Darn!
Things must be slow in the studios if these guys are on the road in 2-3000 seat venues... |

Some guys really do like to perform live in front of an audience.
And no I am not being sarcastic. |

And while I have no idea what Lyle charges for such an event, I do know that a good corporate band can cost upwards of $25k - and that's without international fame on Lyle's level. I'd fly to Texas for a gig with Lyle Lovett for a grand or 2 in my pocket. I'd bet Lee and Russ Kunkle made more than that!
Speaking of Lyle, one of the drummers I play with all the time (just last night even) toured with the headlining act that Lyle opened for back in the early 80's. Apparently, the band that Lyle was with at the time (as a guitarist) almost sent him home from that European tour, until they let him sing a few songs. Immedately following that tour, they recorded his first album. Jim (my drummer friend) says that he and his band were pretty nervous having to follow Lyle's band. I don't doubt it... |

At the end, he brought out a cell phone and filmed the audience.

He is a down to earth guy.

IMHO, those are the best venues to see shows and I'm sure they like being able to actually connect with some of the crowd.

But as Jauqo said, a lot of folks love playing live, and Lee has always done live work in between studio gigs.
