Metal bassist meets orchestra

Always liked Hammerfall, the metal band from Sweden. The bass player, who has since moved on, was a cool dude. He looked cool, sounded cool, and has a cool name (magnus rosen).

Anyway, he put up a Myspace page and I found a cool video of him playing with a huge orchestra in Sweden. Him out front, with his full metal gear on, playing bass along with the rest of the band. His gear choice is interesting too. Looks like a Ampeg 4x10, and on the other side, some kind of tall skinny Eden rig?

The first video clip on the left...

At times, I didn't think it was working at all, didn't fit together. At other times, it was very integrated.

I dont really get the idea behind that. I think it sounds like teh orchestra is playing by them self and that Magnus is playing by himself. Same as with the video of him playing with the ensamble.......seems like he is trying to show his chops all the time instead of actually playing with the ensamble.

That's kind of my conclusion too. There were a few brief moments where his bass riffs were cool, fit right in, but the rest was very odd. His tone was kind of wrong too.

Yeah i think his tone should be warm and bassy when he is playing with acoustic instruments. I dig the fact that he is trying to do something diffrent but he should put his ego aside

I get you're a metalhead, but no Magnus, you shouldn't wear a see-through blouse on stage with an orchestra.

That looked weird when he came out with his Hammerfall gear on! ***? If you ever see his hammerfall demo video, the one he used to get an audition with them, it was insanely good. He played every style in the universe, and all equally well. These videos make him look like he just showed up the night of and started wanking around.

I could see how a bassist, up front, with a rock bass, could do a cool thing with an orchestra playing classical music. It caught my attention, but was just not blown away like I thought. Oh well.

Can't say I'm impressed. I've played bass guitar with an orchestra on occasion, and I can understand how hard it is to make work, but that tone is just not right for what he was working with.

I do like Hammerfall though,

I would have liked to see credit for the composer. Is it him? Is the composer also the orchestrator... is it him?

A good idea that didn't make it, though well done.
