Metal Bassists that play fretless?

Sign in to disble this ad
Can anyone give some examples of metal bands that have a bassist who play fretless and any song that shows it well? Im considering getting a fretless, but i wanna see how it sounds in context with metal music.

It was re-released a couple of years ago and there are clips on cduniverse. The vocals might take a bit of getting used to but it's worth a bit of time, this is really one of the most amazing albums out there. Malone also released a couple of albums under the name of Gordian Knot, it's not really Metal as such but interesting nonetheless. He's an accomplished Stick player too.

Take it or leave it, that's about the quality of the album. It's possible to hear Malone playing.

You can also check out Aghora's myspace page (myspace.com/aghora) to see how Sean's fretless sounds in those songs. Also, I think on youtube.com there's a clip of Steve Digiorgio playing with Death in a music video, The Philosopher, and there's always both their websites (http://www.seanmalone.net and http://www.stevedigiorgio.com) which have sound clips.

For what it's worth also, I'm a fretless player who does play metal, with a plectrum of all things possible. Though both aformentioned players are fingerstyle players, they're both huge influences on me, and I've even taken to Steve Digiorgio's E-C tuning on his fivers. Fretless sounds great for metal IMHO.

Joey Vera (Armored Saint) plays fretless on some of their songs...

I don't know if you can call it metal but Tony Franklyn played a mean fretless on Blue Murder's S/T cd....

You can try 80s metal band Blue Murder - great fretless playing from Tony Franklin. It may be a bit dated sounding in some of the songs but solid work. The self-titled album is the one to listen to, imo.

Martin Mendez of Opeth. Also one of Opeth's previous bass players played some fretless.

Does Tony Levin count? He's played on some pretty heavy stuff.

Orphaned Land's Uri Zelcha plays fretless on some songs.

Although I dunno which.

Orphaned Land are just worth checking out in general. Yep.
