Mic Todd and Coheed and Cambria

Recently I've been listening to a lot of Coheed. I originally got into them before the release of Good Apollo Vol. 1, and have been a huge fan of theirs ever since, and also a believer that Good Apollo is some of their best work (although I've been listening to their earlier stuff more and more and keep getting blown away).

Mic Todd is an amazing bassist and even on simpler songs, he manages to spice things up and keep it interesting. I was devestated when he left the band a year back, and nothing made me happier than when he came back. his playing really changed my whole perspective on what a bass was capable of doing.

Just thought I'd share that. So any other Coheed/ Mic lovers out there?

I liked Coheed and Cambria better when they called themselves Rush

Check this out. Mic (with Chris Penne on drums, I think) covering Teen Town during a Final Cut jam.

LMFAO that was great. But in all seriousness I do really enjoy Rush and just got back from seeing them live in Dallas for the Snakes and Arrows tour and they were amazing but the point of saying all of that was

The selling point for me on Coheed was when my drummer told me to check them out becuase they were practically a modern day Rush. I enjoy the music for the most part. I was blown away when i found out that Claudio has all of the albums interlinked into a story, that is amazing. They are Talented musicians. I now own a spector rebop 4 just like Mic Todd and that was a selling point on buying that bass as he was practically the only endorser of that model spector that i recognized (i had also previously owned and enjoyed other spector models though). I love the bass and i enjoy Coheed so if you don't know check em out.

Apparently Claudio never listened to Rush before people began making the comparison, however, I'm sure Mic must have. I've also noticed Think Lizzy and Pink Floyd influences every which where on their albums.

He didn't do that when I saw him play.

Yes actually me and the wife hooked up due to both really liking COCA, mic is a great bassist though he considers himself more of a guitarist lol. We meet him at 07 Detroit warped tour, hung out for hours, took us to see the guys on the bus was really really cool he likes to roam the crowds of shows checking out people (we have seen him at others too) the rush comparison is really old, most people wont give them the time of day because of that.... shame

Oh stop with the old. Not my fault they sound so similar. Doesn't mean they're a bad band. And trust me, they're not hurting over the Rush comparison. They play stadiums and arenas, after all.

It's funny...Richard Christy from Iced Earth and the Howard Stern show loves them, and goes to see them every chance he gets. He loves them so much that during a recent show he had to go to the bathroom, and he didn't want to miss a single song, so he peed in his pants rather than miss a song. Now that's devotion...it's the grossest form of devotion, but devotion nonetheless.

I like the tone he got when he switched to a P-Bass for the last album. His Spector/Geddy Lee Sig albums always seemed like he was getting lost in the mix.

This is actually what makes them more appealing to me; I love me some Rush, and while they are/were a prolific band, their catalog is still finite. I see Coheed as Rush Evolved, giving me more awesome, thematic prog rock.

It's similar to the last Trivium album, which for all intensive purposes was pre-suck Metallica. They aren't doing as good of a "tribute" as Coheed does, but the comparison is still apt.

I am a big fan of Coheed, and a big Mic Todd fan as well.

I can understand that a casual listener might hear some similarities between them and Rush - high range vocalists, complex arrangements, concept songs - but there is a lot of individuality going on in Coheed as well. No one should dismiss them as a knock off, that's for sure.

Really? I thought his Spector tones on "The Suffering" and "Welcome Home" fit - if not cut through- quite well, if that's what he was using; it definitely sounds like a Spector on those songs.

'Nothing against his p-bass tone, of course. For me though, I think I'm partial to the tone on "Good Apollo, blah-blah-blah" vol.1. I'll have to dig up some of the older material, like "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth" and check out how he sounds there. I definitely hear some Rush in Coheed, although I can't say I'd ever confuse the two...

I've had a hard time getting IV out of my cd player recently. Even my 2 year old digs it (turn up the radio daddy!).

Mic Todd is definitely a great bassist, and I dig most of what he does.

As far as the Rush comparison, to me, the only thing I hear that's really similar is the vocals. Perhaps I need to really dig into some Rush, but I don't really associate the 2 bands at all.

Coheed and Cambria are one of my favourite bands. Met them before a gig before; really nice bunch of guys. I know they get alot of stick for the concept album idea and the high-pitched vocals but I'm very fond of Mic Todd's bass lines. I think he has a very strong sense of where, when and what to play.
