Michael Anthony Gets the Boot from Van Halen

Sign in to disble this ad
According to an interview in the Feb. Guitar World, Eddie Van Halen kicked Michael Anthony out of the band, apparently because he was touring with Sammy Hagar as "The Other Half" and playing VH songs. Eddie says "Alex is the other half of Van Halen, they're just a cover band."

MA has been replaced by Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie's 15-year old son, who has been playing bass all of three months.

Yay Wolfy!!! LOL!

Diamond Dave's making a comeback?

Seriously, this band blew it's load a LONG time ago. I like Hagar but Dave was the shiznit and nothing by VF will ever come close to the first 5-6 albums IMHO.

I love the good VH stuff, but their output has worn so thin over the years, maybe it's time just to say "hey guys, we had a good run, now lets retire to our mansions".

IIRC, he's actually a guitarist (allegedly very good) and switched to bass for this project.

Sad for VH but I guess I understand Eddie VH's move...I mean I would pick my 15 yr old (who is a VERY good bassist) to fill in for me on my rock gigs...

Well.....who's gonna tell Mick and Keith then??? If they can keep on ticking then why shouldnt 'ol Ed and the boys. Thats kinda whack too that MA is out there playing VH songs and making money with a different band, no one's mentioning that, NOT to mention that it could be a legal nightmare.

Something's not right, here. According to this article, Anthony left the band a few months ago (the article was published last month). The article also mentions that Eddie's kid played on stage with him in 2004, so I think the "3 months" thing is off a bit.

Yeah, but I think it was guitar he played onstage then. I think he just recently switched to bass for his dad.

Actually, MA started the band with EVH in 1974, so that makes it 32 years with VH!

Anyone can play Michael Anthony's parts, but not everyone can sing like him. His backups are what make him the other half of VH, hands down. There is no way they can pull this off without adding backup singers.

I've seen VH live, but the best "VH" show was Sammy and the Waboritas with Michael Anthony "dropping by" at the Joint at the Vegas Hard Rock Cafe. Killer, killer show.

Yes..most of his bass lines pretty eay to play..but he created them. I've always thought that he was way underrated as a bassist. If you really listen, he plays some pretty creative lines on occasion

Edward and Alex Van Halen are losing their minds. Maybe it's the drugs and booze, maybe it's the...well, I'm pretty sure it's the drugs and booze. But Eddie was on Howard Stern recently and he was almost incomprehensible. I have also heard of many drunken appearances at trade shows by Eddie. They've pretty much lost their minds and are mere shadows of their former selves, especially Eddie. At least the Stones can put together a coherent album and tour and not have people talking about how F'd up they are.

I'd have to agree.
Van Halen hasn't been my thing since 1988 or so, but I still respect alot of the old recordings.
But what they're doing now, for anyone to be doing that, is just embarrassing. I remember EVH talking up how VH version 3with the other singer was gonna be the best. That lasted what, a month? Then they do a best of with DLR on 2 songs, which no one cared about, and got rid of him again, and then SH left, then came back, then left again, now they fire MA....
Blah. Van Halen is like the Jerry Springer show of rock and roll.
