Michael Anthony on That Metal Show

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone catch Michael Anthony on That Metal Show this weekend? He was asked the obvious question about the VH reunion and why he was not included. This would have been the perfect opportunity to take some shots at his former bandmates for doing something that I think most of us agree was really disrespectful to Michael but he handled himself with class and really took the high road again. Even if your not a fan of him as a musician, you gotta love the guy. I personally have boycotted Van Halen since this happened and will not buy any albums that they may or may not release going forward but that's beside the point. Michael Anthony is the man in my book! There was also another great rant by Eddie Trunk about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I love when he rips on them!

I think it's wierd that Trunk cares so much about the R&R HOF. Seriously, does anyone really care if their favorite band or artist isnt in the HOF? It's not like in sports, where the HOF is based directly on your talents as a player. Everyone knows when it comes to entertainment, that things of this nature have very little to do with an artists artistic merit and everything to do with politics and mainstream popularity. Does Rush not being there make Geddy Lee any less of a monster bassman? I don't even think Rush cares that they're not in the HOF.

Yeah, I agree but the point he made with Michael Anthony was he would tell them to screw off if they tried to induct him after waiting for so long. The RRHOF is a joke to me. I don't know if I could respect them more but if Rush refused the invite, I'd find out. I didn't mean to get off on that sidebar, I just think it's funny that Trunk gets so fired up and I see his point.

I just loved what they had to say about Mike's voice going on tour (via pro tools) and him getting to stay home.

I'd like to think that if I ever ran into Eddie Van Halen, I wouldn't puss out and I would tell him what a crappy thing that was and how a lot of VH fans really took it personally.

Who knows what you would do in that situation but I too would like to think I would treat him accordingly. It seems to me and it's not like I hang out with these guys or anything, that Michael was shunned because he didn't cut ties with Sammy Hagar after he left Van Halen. It reminds me of Newstead being forced to leave Metallica because he wanted to have a side project. I don't get what goes through these guys heads but I think EVH's struggles with drugs may have fried him a little. He just doesn't seem that with it anymore. Either way, I'm done with VH unless Michael returns.

Yeah the RH HOF is complete bullcrap. I think I read somewhere that LL Cool J is getting in next year? That's LAME!

Some dude said that it's called the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame because it includes ALL offsprings of Rock'n'roll be it rock, hard rock, funk, metal, etc, etc. I just still thinks it's bull to include all these pop acts, because the bands and artists elected should at least ROCK!

Absolutely! I've always felt the same way.

I happened to catch the show while flipping through channels.
Mike is a class act all the way.

Yeah, but Newsted was there for the induction, and was actually inducted.

This is a real low blow, a REAL low one.

Bill Murray: You are staring at me. It's a hairpiece. A piece.
Wichita: I'm sorry. No, it's just that you look remarkably like Eddie Van Halen.
Bill Murray: I just saw Eddie Van Halen.
Wichita: Nuh-uh.
Tallahassee: Really?
Bill Murray: Yeah.
Wichita: Wow.
Tallahassee: Where?
Bill Murray: The Hollywood Bowl.
Tallahassee: How was it?
Bill Murray: He's a zombie.

Not to turn this into an Eddie-bashing thread, but based on what I read in Roth's book and a lot of stuff I've read online over the years, ol' smilin' Eddie evidently can be a real dick. Total control freak, too. Kinda stings since I was a HUGE VH (and EVH) fan back in the day (as a guitarist).

Now that I'm concentrating solely on the bass, I'm only interested in what Anthony's doing these days. And truthfully, has Eddie really done anything interesting musically since '5150', or even '1984'? Just my two cents.

Citing simple clear truth isn't bashing.
My VH collection ended at 1984.

Mike Anthony is also a great showman. Wolfie has the stage presence of a potted plant.

Interesting show, I found what he said about Chickenfoot interesting. I don't know if it was commercially contrived, but I always got the impression that Chickefoot started out as some friends just getting together and jamming, and making an album mostly for fun, and that's what it is. Nice that they'll try to work around the individual members' busy schedules. I really like the first album quite a lot.

Michael Anthony is clearly the coolest dude in VH. Love the original band's first 5 records.
Gave up when covers and keyboards began to bore me. Love Eddie's playing, but he has shown himself to be a drunken azz many times. Glad to see him pulling it together, but still something is lacking in the heart department. Don't even care a whole lot for Chickenfoot, but they are way more VH than VH. Hell, Dan Halen is more VH than VH these days.
