Of all the 'solo bassists' his stuff is the most musical to me...

First thing I heard from him years ago was "Red Right Returning" off "Drastic Measures". Here is a youtube of him playing it in 2007
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gyVSNWXoJs

I really dig his work with Michael Hedges too... lots of material to get you started on youtube.

I've just realised I suck at bass...

I'll never be that good.

Red Right Returning is one of my favorite songs ever. Like play it at my funeral kinda favorite.
The house concerts videos on YouTube are fantastic.
Check out Soliloquy. I think his solo bass stuff is the best.

No need to take that attitude...

I don't expect to ever play quite like Mr. Manring either. But his playing doesn't intimidate me, it inspires me to further develop my own voice...

It's all in the way you choose to look at it...

Michael is the most amazing & astonishing player; one needs to see him live & solo to really appreciate his high level of creativity.

I recommend his duo album "Equilibre'", with acoustic guitarist David Cullen. These boys COOK!

Also, his own CDs "The Book of Flame" and "Thonk"(which is out-of-print, but available on Amazon from independent sellers).

As well, the "De Man Ia" CD with guitarist Alex de Grassi and percussionist Christopher Garcia;

the "Carbonne-Di Piazza-Manring" CD with bassists Yves Carbonne and Dominique Di Piazza;

the "A Place in Time" CD with French acoustic guitarist Cyril Achard, on which Michael plays a gorgeous, beautiful solo version of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco";

also, with Chapman stick player Jim Lampi, the CD "North".

These are good starts along with "Soliloquy".

Most of these are available from CD Baby.

Go to his website manthing.com for a list of his recorded work.

He is also the nicest guy you'd want to meet, very low key & humble.

If you'd like to hear Michael play as part of a 'band', you may also want to check out:

"Torn Between Dimensions" by At War With Self

and "Sadhappy".

He did a few tours with Michael Hedges, where they played a set each, solo, then a set together. Guaranteed to make any bassist OR guitarist feel inadequate if they have any self-esteem problems.

And yes, he's a really nice humble guy. Hedges was being mobbed (OK, it was five people after a small show, and they were very respectful, but...) so we took a few moments to speak to Manring as we waited our turn. He seemed very flattered that we were paying close attention to his performance. Which was stunning, of course; this was one of the shows where he played three basses at once, very musically. These two guys complemented each other in a way that was hard to believe unless you saw it live.

Once again, it seems like some of the most gifted, talented artists are also among those with the sweetest dispositions. I saw Manring play at BassDay '97 here in New York, then again a few years later at the 92nd Street "Y" (on a double bill with Leo Kottke!). "Incredible playing" hardly seems adequate to describe this guy in action.

I didn't speak with him personally, but a friend of mine did, characterizing Manring as a really cool guy, very accessible and easy to talk with. So much for the stereotype of the artist as self-absorbed jerk...

Ooooops! Forgot that one.

Definitely a must-listen for Manring fans!

Worth a listen, too: "Project M" with fellow bassists Jim Stinnett, Grant Stinnett, and Rob Gourlay.
