Crazy, I just spent a month up in Pellston, and I'd never heard of it before this year. Small little town.

Hey cool! I love this thread! Yes, I play in a PW band on Sunday mornings. Looking for more though...would love to startup either a new band or find one that's looking for a Bass. Already have interested drummer, female vocalist. Need lead guitar and keyboard would be nice too. Just bought a 5r this morning, Spector ReBop Euro 5 string. Currently playing a Spector Legend 4 Classic which I absolutely love. Been noticing a lot of new songs are being play on the low "B" string now. Gotta keep up Are you in a local band? Lets get together some time!

No kidding! What brought you up this way? Snowboarding?
Not many live in Pellston but in the out laying areas. I live northeast of Pellston on Douglas Lake. Nice quiet Lake. Did you hear of the DLB (Douglas Lake Bar & Grill)? Great place to eat! Right on Douglas Lake.

I was taking a class at the University of Michigan Biostation. I'm guessing you've heard of it ... or at least notice the influx of college-aged kids during the summer.

The camp I was at was on Douglas Lake... it's really beautiful out there. Spent quite a bit of time canoeing around the lake and whatnot.

I'm pretty sure I remember driving by the DLB at some point, but the only bar I ended up going to was ... hmm, now I'm blanking on the name. But their slogan was like "if you've found us, you're probably lost."

edit: I'm pretty sure the bar I went to was called Hoppies. It was pretty fun.

Oh yeah I know about the UofM biostation! I know the manager Bob V. and Chris Vogel. I'll be racing xctry skiing with Bob this winter. The station owns like 2/3s of the land around Douglas Lake. Hoppies! Oh yeah! One of our favorite local hangouts. Great food! Friday fish fry! Glad you had the experience of the great upnorth.

Grew up in Flint, moved to Holly, then to the hell that's known as Pontiac, to Ann Arbor, to Troy, to Ferndale, and now in Huntington Woods...696 & Woodward Ave.

Love Woodward Ave.

Cool band name! What's your genre? I'll be out of town for the weekend...too bad, I'd show otherwise. Don't know what's up with my PM?

@>iceboxbass--still can't PM you.Says you've chosen not to accept or aren't allowed..Talk to a Moderator maybe..

As far as us(intoxitones),we play a little of everything.I know that sounds cliche',but.. When we started this band,we decided we weren't going to be another cookie-cutter cover band.We don't play Brown Eyed Girl,Mustang Sally,The Joker,or anything by Bob Seger. There's simply too much good music out there that hasn't been played to death(live or radio) to have to play the same stuff as everyone else. We play Beatles,Clutch,Pixies,Ween,NIN,Michael Jackson,Santana,Jack Johnson,Old Crow Med.Show,Primus,CCR,Gnarls Barkly,Men-at-Work,Smashing Pumpkins...a little of everything

Lansing, MI, in the house. So my first question: have any of you guys found a music scene with a pulse anywhere in the entire state?

Well, it's probably not as bad as I think it is. I've been playing for about fourteen years off and on, and I was in a reasonably serious (we weren't trying to get rich but we liked what we did) metal band for the better part of ten years. Towards the end of the 90's and the early 2000's, it seemed like there was a pretty vibrant metal scene in and around Mid-MI, and also a really nice blues scene with some great local bands. But nowadays it seems like there are only a small handful of venues in the state offering paying gigs on a steady basis.

Take that with a grain of salt, though. I haven't been in a gigging band for the last two years, although I'm hoping to latch on with a funk/blues outfit sometime soon(ish).

Wll, that sounds about right. Where I'm at, the music scene is dead unless you're in an amateur screamo or grindcore band or something like that. Royal Oak and some parts deep in Detroit seem to be showing vital signs - barely- but it's pretty difficult to get out there right now. A lot of Detroit's music scene, so far as rock music goes anyhow, is older people playing the blues or younger people playing garage rock. There's definately some movement in Royal Oak but I've found the whole scene to be kinda pretentious and not very open unless you already have some connection inside.

I agree,it's def. harder to find a good blues or funk gig. When i was down there,I was in Heavy Metal/Rap Rock/Crappy Loud Punk acts, which is high energy fun,but limiting IMO.We did the Hotrocks,Hayloft,Alvins,Old Shilealea,Magic Stick scenes,so yeah, lots of angry stuff. I was really glad to move up here where expression/creativity are widely accepted, even appreciated.
