Mick Karn diagnosed with cancer.

Just heard this very shocking and saddening news, on a visit to his official website.

http://www.mickkarn.net

There is a Facebook appeal which is detailed here: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/...id=42384174231

I'm sure many of you will be as shocked as I am at this, a brilliant player and huge influence on my own playing. Here's hoping he's ok.

One of my main fretless influences.

Sending prayers.

Cancer sucks. Mick Karn deserves a long & fruitful life, he's earned it with his music & his vision. One of my favorite bassists.

I haven't had one for a couple of years, but am getting another soon, and it's at least partly due to him...

(You're in Omaha? Cool...)

I don't own a fretless, but I'd love to have one if I could afford it. A lot of the basslines I come up with myself are Karn/Palladino style runs and slides, though on a fretted instrument it's never going to get near to having the same effect. Hopefully I'll get my hands on a fretless one day, as Mick is the player who really made me sit up and take notice.

Well, I was. I just moved to Colorado Springs. Got the fretless off of Craigslist in Omaha the day before I moved. The first line I've learned for it is European Son.

On The Gear Page site there is a link for donations, I guess his situation is pretty bad. Would the mods allow the link to be posted here?

Info for donations for Mick can be obtained from his website :
http://www.mickkarn.net/ Very sad; I was lucky to meet Mick years ago and he was somewhat shy but friendly and funny as well; one of my most cherished musical memories and great to finally see the man perform live.

Saw it on PorcupineTree.com. Sad news. Unfortunately his cancer is pretty advanced.

What a great setback for all of us. The "Euro Bootsy" had so much to say. Whenever I need fretless love I'd play The Tooth Mother. Plaster the Magic Tongue and Feta Funk. Mick didn't even know the notes on his bass! All of the work with Kate Bush was done by ear because he couldn't read music. Amazing dude.

I'm still stunned and dismayed at the news, he has been a big influence on my playing and even attitude towards bass. (Despite me not being a great fretless player, hehehe.) I didn't hesitate to send a donation, hope it helps in some small way.

Time to get out the fretlesses and knock out some fund-raising Karn cover songs, Gentlemen!

A friend sent me the news a few days ago and I am still reeling. Mick is such an absolute original and such a creative spirit.

This has been a bad year for losses in the bass community...
