What is it?!

Was he still using the Gibson G3/Grabber or had he switched to a P? Was he using Ampeg or Mesa or a DI?

There's a ton of info for his gear in the past decade... but i haven't found anything for the pre-Nimrod stuff. i love the tone on this album in peticular and i'm just trying to figgure it all out... it's nagging me!!

I have said P bass and GK... close but no cigar.

Haha, that's MY tone. I'm not trying to change my sound... just really curious as to what he was using on that album.

he's always used a precision in the studio, even when he was using the gibson onstage. usually di and mic'ed vintage svt 810 for amplification, leaning more heavily on the mic.

there's an interview somewhere where he says he's using like, a Mesa M-2000, a 4x10" and an 18", IIRC. This was earlier in their career for sure.

I'm pretty sure Dookie is not a Precision, it doesn't sound anything like one. I always just assumed it was his G3.

I believe he used a Stingray at one point early on as well.

I always thought Insomniac was the Gibson G-3. Having owned one, it definately has that middy zing that Insomniac has...especially Stuart and the Avenue.

As for amps, not sure...think he was on Ampeg on Dookie and Insomniac. The P-basses (live and in the studio) and Mesa rig didn't come til Nimrod.

I'm always amazed at the sheer amount of trivia you know, that I wish I knew!

sorry, but dookie was all precision. i read the bass player article. and the bulk of his stuff was done with a precision. i won't say he never used the gibson in the studio, but the vast majority of the time it was a precision.
