Question Mike Gordon Anyone? (Phish)

Sign in to disble this ad
i'm new to these boards, and i'm somewhat shocked i have not read much about "jam band" bassists.

IMO Mike Gordon is a very good player, he has a wonderful approach to the bass, and we can't really argue that Phish is very very talented at what they do.

what are you're thoughts on Mike?

I'm a phish fan dating back to the early 90's. I've always thought of Mike Gordon to be a great bassist!

Yeah, i must say though.. being such a huge phish fan, i've been trapped in "gordon land" for wayyyy too long.

i'm finally seeing the light and really getting into Miller & funk

i am a big fan of Gordon and Phish--he is a major influence on my playing and approach to creating basslines. Definitely one of my favorite "live" bass players

Mike is a great player, but too low IMO. He can definitly pull off some funky lines at times, but you can't hear all of them often.

Mike is a great player with a lot of knowledge! He's one weird dude, but no doubt he has talent!

btw, if you are bored check out the picture of him under the endorsed Lakland artist on their website. I thought it was HILARIOUS!

lol that picture is great. I just finished a post about Mike in another thread and then I see this one at the top. If I had to pick one bassist that I looked up to the most, it's Mike. His phrasing can be so unique at times, and a lot of the time, down-right weird! But then he has those moments when what he's doing melodically is just beautiful.

Although I love the tone he was getting from his Modulus over last several years of Phish, it's a damn shame his Languadoc was stolen. I'm always hoping to see it sitting in a pawn shop some day, so I can buy it and return it to it's rightful owner

I love Gordo, and actually met him at last year's Mountain Jam. He seemed really confused haha.

Great player, he has a really thick and meaty style. He's always chugging along. Great Player

As much as I like Phish and the Kottke albums, I actually prefer "Inside In" - between that and "The Story of the Ghost", I emersed myself in his sound about 2 years ago. He's at the top of my list for "pick playing" influences (I don't use a pick often, but when I do, he's the one I do my darndest to rip off blatently)

Nice pic! I really like Mike Gordon, especially the jazzier stuff from "A Picture of Nectar".

IMHO jam bands have some of the best bassists out there. You really have to know your stuff and have a great ear to improv like that.

Also from the jam scene, I really like Dave Schools from Widespread and Ryan Stasik from Umphrey's McGee (strange band name). I sure there's many more I haven't heard yet too. Any other jam bassists I should be checking out?

+1... I got him and Leo to do an acoustic show at my school last year. I met them at their hotel and they were supposed to follow me in their rental car, and they got lost! As you can probably tell by this picture with him, definitely one of the most awkward people i've ever met, but hands down one of my favorite bassists. Tasteful slapper, master of many styles.
