Ok, so does anyone know his settings? I know he has a number of pre amps and stuff.....sometimes it sounds like the mids are boosted, other times they sound slightly scooped. Anybody know how he sets his EQ to get that growl?

I would say a lot of that is the Spector.....its naturally thumping. Butm there's something in there that means it cuts thru a lot, and it isn't lots of middly mids like newsted.....I can't quite put my finger on it.

newsted has (at least live) a lot of highs and mid highs on his sound. mike has a very low tone. so i guess its the low mids you have to boost.

EDIT: by the way, here is a link where mike is talking about his bass, song production and so on...

Doesn't really go into detail of the settings, but it shows the signal chain. Hope this helps.

here's your standard nickelback bass line... root root root root root root root root root root root root root root root FIVE root root root root root root root root root FIVE!

just max your volume and turn up the mids/lows. As a better excerise look to talented bassists to learn from not this hack.

Oh come on guys... just cause Nickelback may not be something you like to play doesn't mean ya gotta say he is crap....

Music is in the ear of the listener as beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

For the record... I like Nickleback and the driving root bass lines.... a lot of time less is more... if I want to listen to intricate lines I will listen to Vic Wooten or the such... but every once in a while it is good to get back to your roots, pun intended, lol,

*steps off soapbox*

Thanks you and good day....LOL

I personally have no issue with simple basslines, its all the crap around the basslines that I am not a fan of. It's all so cheesy...Frank Zappa's worst nightmare

There's an interview out there where he gives the low-down.
I remember him saying he boosts the sellout and formula, frequently replaces kneepads and otherwise just does what the Budweiser (or whatever) executives tell him.
JK! Nickleback rocks my world! Psych!

This is just another sample of people not getting it. Most of the popular bands are not popular because they have mastered their instrument, they mastered entertaining. They are part of the "Entertainment" industry. I like Knickelback, Poison, Kiss and other entertaining bands but I also like Yngwie, Vai, Satch and other masters. But, look at what sells, not the wizards, the entertainers. Knickleback gross more in a tour than any G3 cast because the majority of ticket buyers are not into guys with chops.

lordy. i swear, in every thread that involves Mike, there is some battle of wills as to whose better than who. really? seriously? eesh..been trying to read and understand the workings of bass stuff, mind whirring at how they get it, understand it, shuu and Mike, and i get pissy people ranking on Nickelback and the music Mike and they create. there is no getting away from the haters..it just boggles my mind.

i wish people could just respect this man and the hard ball busting he's done to get to where he's at. One of the nicest guys ever, and holy hell does his sound just..snap my neck and grab me.

i love the heavy no nonsense sound, i would love to know why sometimes he uses picks, and sometimes not. how he came to understand all this stuff. is he super hands on? or does shuu pretty much keep it pinned down for him. something tells me Mike is a "i gotta know how it all works" kinda guy. the crunch and beef of his sound just..kills. their new album, Dark Horse..so many good bass lines in there, i love that on each album there are songs that really showcase his sound. i've come to expect it on each new Disc they give us. to me, it's the highlight.

I love what someone said about less is more. when you want rock and groove..nothing beats that philosophy. Mike's style of playing suits this well.

Yeah, I never got all the nickelback hate either, I guess when your that succesful the haters come full throttle. My band covers leader of men and its definitely one of my fave songs to play, although I do spice it up by adding my own lil runs here and there(we're not the "gotta keep it just like the original recording type of cover band.)
