Mike oldfields great bass playing before he was famous

Mike oldfield was picked up as a 17 yearold folk guitarist to play bass in Kevin ayers band; The whole wide world. he recorded his first album, the highly successful instrumental progressive album tubular bells, while he was working with ayers. the rest is history.

Anyways I`m more of a fan of kevin Ayers, than oldfield. but his Incredibly creative and unique bassplaying is so good that I wanted to share it with you, as these recordings are not so famous. In a way he fills the role of lead guitar player and bassist at the same time on a few tracks.

two live clips:

notice his cool intro

‪Kevin Ayers - Oh My‬‏ - YouTube

here is another one where the bass is not so audible, but you can see more of his technique wich is pretty unique.

an album song:

this is a great song, but has an annoying psychedelic soundcollage in the middle of the song.. just skip 1min and 20sec when it starts...

the song is great, and his playing is great and high in the mix. he truely switch between lead playing (with an occasional fuzz here and there) and bass playing especially the last verse wich is very different form the first two...

‪Kevin Ayers - Rheinhardt & Geraldine/ Colores Para Delores‬‏ - YouTube

just an inspiration of mine that I wanted to share and great original music!
