Mike porcaro better than Gene Simons?

Sign in to disble this ad
I had this discussion with a friend. My friend who is a guitar players says that I am over rating Mike porcaro, and that for example gene simons is a bassist of the same caliber. Both solid and supportive. I really don`t know much of kiss. I told him gene is an amateur compared to Mike porcaro. What do you think?

Gene is a brilliant businessman, a marketing genius, a funny guy, and a good Rock Bassist. Mike is a trained musician and a different animal.

I wish there had not been so many people in line to meet him at NAMM, I'd have loved to tell Gene how much I like him. I have to admit I love to watch Gene's reality TV show and see his teenaged kids get the best of him

I think that was a bad choice.

+1 Comparing Gene Simmons to Mike Porcaro is like comparing Liberace to Oscar Peterson.

I like the way you said that.

Gene Simmons inspired me to take up bass back in 1977'ish. I thought he was the coolest member of Kiss, and being a 13 year old, I wanted to play music like he did.

I later discovered Toto and they are still one of my favorite bands.

From a musicians point of view, one is entertainment, 'fairy floss' for the masses. The other is a musician. You will not win such an argument, because they have already proven their ears are not open.

Here's a pic of me and Mickey Free back in the day.
Gene's TV personna is an ACT.
He was instrumental in getting my Bro. Mickey Free's career going.
Mickey was in my old band that opened shows for Kiss.
Gene saw him and helped get him the gig as guitar player and front man for Shalamar.
Grammy winner for best song for movie score "Dancin' in the sheets" for Beverly Hills Cop.

Very generous person and a great business- man.

(note the Gibson grabber I'm playing in the pic!)

Oh..Mickey Free is NOT a girl....(whatever Dave Chappelle)

^^^Gene does come across as being a pretty decent human being. And a fellow bass bro'. But to the OP, The two are as alike as chalk and cheese.

And honestly, one of the best interviews you will ever hear. He is a very intelligent and articulate speaker, that is honest and candid as the day is long. I believe he was the keynote speaker at last years AARP national convention. As a bassist, Mike Porcaro he is not.

I think your remarks are spot on, and that your friend is absolutely clueless.

Here's the one I like..

Mu*si*cian-

One who studies and performs musical tones combining rhytm, melody and harmony while starving, scrimping, moaning, complaining and generally having fun.

I'm really surprised at all the support for Gene Simmons in here. I think he's a talentless, classless, greedy douchebag.
