I understand that Prince removed the bassline from "When Doves Cry". Has anyone here ever had the chance to hear that bassline? Or better yet, has anyone tried to create a bassline for it just for fun? I'm going to attempt to create one and post it on youtube. |

For supposedly being a very good bassist, The Artist sure never gave the instrument much love in the mix. Radical contrast to someone like Lenny Kravitz where the bass line is never in question. |

If I couldn't have him on bass, I would just go without bass in my music."
That was maybe in the late 80s/early 90s? I don't remember which bassist he was referring to. |

Nope...hadda play.
I de-tuned my "E" doen to "D".
I played this 1/8th rhythm (which matched the kick)-
/1--&----/1--&3&4-/
Notes were-
/G--G----/G--GGED-/
Many others do this also.
I did notice that my friend's '80s cover band with Oteil Burbridge on bass...Oteil did not play...he just danced around & played some random piano stuff.

I would love to hear the original tracks of that and "When Doves Cry" just to appreciate the full effect of Prince's decision.

Prince used to be one of the baddest cat's on the planet holding down the bottom. IMHO |

That was maybe in the late 80s/early 90s? I don't remember which bassist he was referring to. | I am not sure of the exact date but when Prince converted to Jehovah Witnesses from being a Seventh Day Adventist Larry Graham was his spiritual mentor and is the go to guest on special shows Prince puts on up to this day. As I understand the Revolution broke up in part because the band could not put up with Prince's then new spiritual devotion.

He was pretty vocal in a Bass Player Magazine interview a long time ago that the instrument providing the bass line (the lowest part of the performance) needs to be an electric or acoustic bass instrument. Sometimes a guitar is all it takes, sometimes voices.
And in that same issue I believe, Rhonda Smith talked about a cool muted bass line she played for "When Doves Cry" live, based on a line Prince came up with during rehearsals for that tour.

I really dig it!

Prince is a musical genius. Check out The Stick By The Time. He plays lead bass on that track.
