Modern slap players

I'm hungry for some new inspiration and I have a taste for slap these days. I'm looking for modern funk, rock, and metal slap players. I'm well familiar with Primus & RHCP. I enjoy Wooten and Miller but right now I want something with a little more edge.

I don't need the craziest chops. Just some tasty slap grooves in a modern setting. Thanks in advance.

Listen to some urban contempoary Gospel or some of the current Smooth Jazz Artists CDs. That's where the modern day slappers are. Check out David Dyson as well, Check out his tune Donovan James.

I've been getting into Jonas Hellborg lately. Time is the Enemy and Art Metal are great albums and I'm looking for more from him.

Other recommendations are appreciated.

Good People in Times of Evil is awesome. Most of the songs on this album are also on th "Paris" DVD, which I also recommend.

Elegant Punk is also a good listen for some solo bass work from damn near 30 years ago.

I've checked out Infectious Grooves a couple of times. Thanks for the recommendation.

Naetog, I've heard good things about Elegant Punk but I can't find it for sale anywhere. I'll check out the Paris DVD.

Sub'd to see what other people bring. Dumpstaphunk is pretty hot and I dig some Infectious Grooves too. I'll throw a few into the pot....

Ray Riendeau - Liquid
Ray Riendeau - Powderkeg
Adam Nitti - Seven Year Swing
Brian Bromberg - Slang(ish)
Periphery - Make Total Destroy (bass cam)
(Not necessarily slap and I'm not a big metal fan, but it's still pretty awesome)
Periphery - Make Total Destory (full version)

Evan Brewer. That would classify as nutty chops though.

I'm going to respond to your request for "modern slap" by recommending a recording from 1984. Level 42's live set "A Physical Presence" is one of the most involving funk-rock live recordings I've ever heard, and a must for anyone interested in the genre. I was about 15 when I first heard it, and I still spin it every couple months now that I'm...wait for it...42!

IMO, avoid any Level 42 recording, live or otherwise, from the last 10 or 12 years. They've really just been tributing themselves throughout that time, with very little new compelling material.

If you have to have something brand new, check out the Alain Caron solo recordings, the most recent of which is called "Septentrion". Tight, great band, cool tone, maybe just a little sterile.

Doug Johns...just discovered him and like him a lot. He's not afraid to mix a blaring horn section with slapped fuzzy/OD bass. Cool combo and great chops too!

Brian Bromberg is a FAVORITE of mine...Check out his new "Bromberg plays Hendrix" album for a cool take on some classics...

Marcus Miller (duh?)
Adam Nitti
Norm Stockton

The Rippingtons have a lot of slap going if you like the smooth jazz sound.

I'll admit right off the bat that I'm ordinarily predisposed to detest slapping -- just seems like so many bassists get caught up in the technique and the rhythmic patterns without paying enough attention to the musical contribution (or lack thereof) of their basslines, and unfortunately I've felt this way for decades (!) -- but, having said that, Alain Caron is absolutely the first bassist I'd point someone towards who wanted to hear modern slap done right. The guy has an incredible groove, like a built-in atomic clock, and his technique is remarkable uniform/consistent. He's almost a machine...but a very provocatively musical machine.
