Most melodic basisist?

Apologies if this has been asked before. Who do you think the most melodic basists are? McCartney, Moulding (XTC) and Jamerson come to mind.

That is a hard question. . .

I like the basisist from The Cure. . . very melodic.

Geddy. And JPJ. Both very melodic players. Most of Geddy's lines in the classic Rush tunes carried a melody rather than holding down a chord structure. Alex took care of that in the early days.

Aside from Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee and James Jamerson:

Peter Hook - Joy Division/New Order
Johnny McElhone - Altered Images
Colin Moulding - XTC
Chris Squire - Yes

Immediately leap to mind.

Methinks we must consider the solo bassists as the most melodic...........the ones that play fretless with too many strings........you know, more than four............there are lots.

Eric Judy from Modest Mouse is almost painfully melodic at times. One of my favorite players in one of my favorite bands.

The bass player from Pinback, whoever he is, is also incredibly melodic. Too bad his tone isn't all that great. Seems he sucks all of the bass/low-mids out of his tone. Strange.

John Entwhistle was also extremely melodic at times.

+1 for JPJ and Jamerson, too.

Armistead "Zach" Burwell Smith IV. I suspect he cuts the lower frequencies so as to avoid muddiness in his contrapuntal lines.

Mark Egan, Michael Manring and John Pattitucci are on an entirely higher plan than anyone has mentioned so far when it comes to playing melodically. The bass soloists are leaps and bounds more melodic than the band-member rock-guys.

The dudes from The Cure and Modest Mouse aren't even a blip on that radar.

I prefer bassists that write a song with a good melody, than listening to a crap song to get to a melody on bass. Wouldn't you rather hear a nice tune with some nice words than a short bass solo?

I do like both, don't get me wrong, but popular melodies don't have a lot of notes usually, and whenever I hear a bassist playing a melody, they tend to overplay.

If I had to vote for solo in context with being a bassist, give me Jamerson and McCartney.

If I'm voting for melodic bassplayers writing, give me McCartney and Mingus.

just my 2 cents!

I should add to the aforementioned list of melodic players the following:

Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Attractions).

If you can play the lines of Bruce Thomas you are a superb bassist. I did an EC&A tribute thing years back. LOT'S o'work!

steve lawson is my hero when it comes to melodic playing. Yyves Carbonne and Jean Baudin are right up there too. I can only hope to someday be as good as these guys.

Michael Manring, if you consider him a "bassist" in the traditional sense. Otherwise, DEFINITELY Niels Peterson.
