Apologies if this has been asked before. Who do you think the most melodic basists are? McCartney, Moulding (XTC) and Jamerson come to mind. |

Peter Hook - Joy Division/New Order
Johnny McElhone - Altered Images
Colin Moulding - XTC
Chris Squire - Yes
Immediately leap to mind. |

The bass player from Pinback, whoever he is, is also incredibly melodic. Too bad his tone isn't all that great. Seems he sucks all of the bass/low-mids out of his tone. Strange.
John Entwhistle was also extremely melodic at times.
+1 for JPJ and Jamerson, too. |

The bass soloists are leaps and bounds more melodic than the band-member rock-guys.
The dudes from The Cure and Modest Mouse aren't even a blip on that radar.

| | | I prefer bassists that write a song with a good melody, than listening to a crap song to get to a melody on bass. Wouldn't you rather hear a nice tune with some nice words than a short bass solo?
I do like both, don't get me wrong, but popular melodies don't have a lot of notes usually, and whenever I hear a bassist playing a melody, they tend to overplay.
If I had to vote for solo in context with being a bassist, give me Jamerson and McCartney.
If I'm voting for melodic bassplayers writing, give me McCartney and Mingus.
just my 2 cents! |

Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Attractions).
If you can play the lines of Bruce Thomas you are a superb bassist. I did an EC&A tribute thing years back. LOT'S o'work! |

| | | | If you're talking bassists that plays in a rock band, I dont think theres any contest....has got to be Tetsu from L'arc |

And Andy Rourke from The Smiths |
