Most memorable/distinctive/recognizable bass lines...

Sign in to disble this ad
I was listening to my itunes just now and "Hysteria" by Muse came on. I couldn't help but think how great and distinctive the bass line is. I've seen live videos and as soon as Wolstenholme starts playing that line, the crowd erupts (totally awesome).

I got to thinking, what are some of the all-time most memorable / distinctive / recognizable bass parts out there?

Let's hear your suggestions. Have fun!!

A few I'll throw out there (they obviously reflect my musical tastes)...
RHCP - Higher Ground
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Faith No More - Epic
Tool - Sober
Rage Against The Machine - Bullet In The Head
Queens Of The Stone Age - No One Knows
Alice In Chains - Would

True. But you could have still listed some of your favourite lines. That is what he's asking for.

Metallica Orion- Middle melody
Nirvana- Love buzz- main riff
Rage Against The Machine- Bullet in the head- Main and breakdown riff
Does this offend you? Yeah- Attack of the 60ft lesbian octopus(Dance, but that bassline is a beast)
Queen- Another one bites the dust
White Zombie- Black Sunshine
Stu Hamm- Outbound
Shoctopus- Mother Tongue(I Know quoting my own band might be a bit lame. But this riff is in my heart and I love it)

I noticed you put the SugarHill Gang before Bernard Edwards and Chic. But considering the song is given credit for starting Rap and Hip Hop the basslines use was probably more important and memoriable then it was originally as just another disco/funk song

(Not a huge fan of the tone, but the main bassline is awesome)

Come on, this thread needs more dance music.

Deee-Light - Groove Is in the Heart
Chic - Good Times, or any Chic song, really
Pino D'Angio - Ma quale idea (might be the funkiest bass line of all time, got sampled by Madison Avenue)
Modjo - Lady (Hear Me Tonight)
Daft Punk - Around the World

Anyway, my personal favorite bass line of all time might be Paul Jackson's beautiful bass riff from Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" off of Headhunters.

Nope, the Jackson 5 recorded in LA not Motown/Detroit with The Funk Brothers. The Jazz Crusaders saxman Wilton Felder laid down their tracks
