Most Non-Technical yet Underrated Bassist

Bassits that have relative skill, sans flashy Jaco, Entwistle-Esque technique.

My choice, THIS GUY:

Pure Awesomeness

1994- Was having trouble with his wireless setup that night, which accounts for the dropping in and out of his bass.

2009-to a crowd of 55,000 Fans-Simple song and bassline but very melodic and groovy, nonetheless, and an awesome song.

Ooooohhhh Yeahhhh

Finally somebody that prefers taste over chops. Some other great simple players are Peter Baltes of Accept, and Adrian Maestas of Slough Feg.

Simplicity doesn't mean talentless like some believe, great songs you posted too!

I've always been a Peter Baltes fan. Great tone and he gets the job done!

Hey, those are great too!! I think I like the first one the best. The second one is good too and singer sounds like Brian Johnson from AC*DC!!

But yeah, I'll take tasty, melodic basslines that are fun to play over that **** that everyone seems to base skill on anyday. I don't understand why people hate Simmons somuch yeahhe's full of himself, is he the best bassist ever?? NO, but in my opinion he created some of the most interesting basslines and counter melodies in the history of rock. I may get bashed to hell for it, but I will take every chance I get to throw it in the face of Gene haters, and I will continue to support the cause of players like Gene, Paul McCartney, Baltes, and Maestas: tasty, counter melody, walking, simple, and interesting basslines instead of boring technical ability that has no life to it at all. Call me closed minded, but if you can't provide a good groove in a song instead of mindless slapping and whacking over a fretboard, then you aren't doing your job, and you aren't a mature bassist. Same with modern day players who pump out straight sixteenth notes, get off the stage.

:/rant

Anyway, I never realized until I started playing it how cool the bassline is to Rock and Roll All Nite, it too is simple, yet catchy and fun to play.

Cliff Williams of AC/DC is a wonderful player who doesn't need a lot of flash or technique to make his point. It's a common malady of many players to dismiss his work as decades of plodding eighth notes. To the contrary, he plays a lot of stuff that shows that he has a strong, tasteful, and musical command of his instrument and his role in the band.

A careful listen and a complete understanding of what really is needed in a solid rock band will reveal him to be a vital part of the successful AC/DC sound.

+1

I think Cliff Williams fits the bill perfectly, and I like mostly that he doesnt try and act like someone he isnt. He's very sure of himself and who he is.

I appreciate the bassists that can do both. Abe Laboriel comes to mind. The man is incredible and can do some mind blowing stuff. However, listen to any of the CDs that he plays on as a studio musician and he is just a solid foundation. Take a listen to Michael Jackson's Dangerous album. Just solid bass playing there.

Okay, he's not "underrated" but Familyman Barrett is clearly not a "technical" player. In fact, from the videos I've seen of him playing solo for an interview or whatever, his technique appears to be pretty sloppy.

..and yet, probably my favourite bassist of all time ever in the whole world ever ever.

What about Joe Bouchard of Blue Öyster Cult? He has some awesome lines on the Fire of Unknown Origin album. Never hear anyone talk about Joe, hell no one even talks about BÖC.
This song has some crazy bass playing too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y00owXSmaOo

mccartney and simmons are the two that spring instantly to mind. both had a great upfront, present, walking groove that was pretty much the lead instrument in thier respective bands.
stever harris is another that, while not especially techinical, is very cool and present.

Douglas "Dougie" Thomson from Supertramp.

No one talks about him yet his basslines are refreshing, interesting and just plain grooving.

Listen to the song Take the Long Way Home from the album Breakfast in America.
