Tommy Cogbill, David Hood and Jerry Jemmont need to be mentioned. Jamerson, Dunn, Macca have already been mentioned. And of course, PC, RB, Percy Heath, Leroy Vinnegar, Doug Watkins, Oscar Pettiford, Israel Crosby and George Duvivier.

Oh, I almost forgot. Carol Kaye, Joe Osborne and Herbie Flowers too.

one of my main influences for sure

what about Chuck Panozzo of Styx?

I run around saying that Steve Harris and Geddy are my main influences, but I can not deny that I channel these two guys ALOT!!!!!

Also, I think of Joey Vera and Frank Bello when it comes to guys who perfectly fit into the style their bands were pulling off

Speaking of taste...

Wahhow! Enjoyed Forest's playing and associated music, then the "vocals" started and I had to shut it down. I miss out on so much great playing/music 'cause that style of "vocal" just isn't to my taste. Please PM me if Forest or his band ever does an instrumental album.

To add to the thread, session aces in particular: Herbie Flowers.

Jimmy Messa and Tim Cook of the Subdudes. Always play what's right and never overplay.

Tasty

Felix Pappalardi. Not so flashy but extremely musical.

First, everything Geddy does is right so, end of that story.

But seriously, Sting is SO tasteful (I've been learning King of Pain the last couple days), also Sklar, Sir Paul, Tim Schmidt and an underrated bass player in metal, Eddie Jackson from Queensryche. \m/

I agree with many of the above...Leland Sklar, Tony Levin, Pino, John Deacon are obvious ones. Timothy B. Schmit isn't so obvious, but another gem.

Nobody mentioned Dusty Hill of ZZTop. It may seem like 'underplaying' to some, but that man has "pocket" for days.
Another favourite is Roger Glover. Also, Dee Murray. He knew how to play the song.

There are some great players getting a shout out in this thread! There is another I did not see yet while skimming through. It is Aston Barrett.

Aston 'Familyman' Barrett's work with Bob Marley and the Whalers is a great example of really wonderful bass playing that is not flashy. If you try to closely imitate what he is playing, you'll find out how well he through-composes the songs while leaving the listener with the impression that he plays nothing more than a simple phrase repeated over and over. His rhythmic accents and melodic variations punctuate the song structure and drive the dynamics and structure of the song.

Some hyper famous classical guitarist once said "Play fast as hell while you're young. Time enough for taste when you're old and slow." (I'm old and slow.)

Stuart Zender. The man's work with Jamiroquai was a HUGE influence for me. His playing is what I think of when I think "tasteful".

This probably accounts for Rush's lack of success and Geddy being held in such low regard by the bass community.
