Jamerson recorded this with Donald Byrd in 1976. To me, it doesn't sound like Jamerson, but I think it is fierce. It kind of makes me sad, because it shows that late in the game, he still had it.

| | | | Is it definitely Jamerson? Didn't think he was still playing in '76, never mind playing so well, although it does sound like he was told to play the chart exactly as it was written, as was the case towards the end, as opposed to his nuanced, varied lines of the 60s.
Incidently, for late in the day Jamerson genius a couple of albums from 1974 stand out: "Nobody Does It Like Me" by Shirley Bassey and "Instant Coffey" by Dennis Coffey. Some immense playing on those, must haves for Jamerson fans imo. |

BTW, I definitely remember that album cover when I was a kid!
Back to the music, that bassline sounds much more typical of Jamerson.

Scott Edwards was the other bass player on that album. |

The band includes Jamerson, Jim Gordon (formerly of Delaney & Bonnie, and Derek & The Dominoes, before he killed is mother), and Larry Carlton.

I think James played upright on it. Then theres a Hugo Montenegro album from around 78 or so called Caravan.

jte | I think if I were to hear Jamerson and Larry Carlton on the same track my head would explode.

I wonder if it wasn't a matter of the master trying to imitate those who imitated him, in an ironic twist? Don't know.
God Bless, Ray

| | | | Hello. In 1976 I played on an album by Donald Dyrd called Caricatures and Jamerson and I were the bass players on the album. The song you are talking about might be me rather than Jamerson. Hope this helps. here's a link also. http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/...aricatures.htm
