The Most Un-Jamerson Jamerson Bassline

Jamerson recorded this with Donald Byrd in 1976. To me, it doesn't sound like Jamerson, but I think it is fierce. It kind of makes me sad, because it shows that late in the game, he still had it.

Is it definitely Jamerson? Didn't think he was still playing in '76, never mind playing so well, although it does sound like he was told to play the chart exactly as it was written, as was the case towards the end, as opposed to his nuanced, varied lines of the 60s.

Incidently, for late in the day Jamerson genius a couple of albums from 1974 stand out: "Nobody Does It Like Me" by Shirley Bassey and "Instant Coffey" by Dennis Coffey. Some immense playing on those, must haves for Jamerson fans imo.

I had the original vinyl, and Jamerson is the bassist listed on that track.

Do you know if he's on the rest of the album?

I think he's just on that tune, but the rest is probably Chuck Rainey or the bassist from the Blackbyrds.

I got Robert Palmer's Pressure Drop album not only because I love him, but it was also one of the later sessions that Jamerson did.

Dang, Palmer and Jamerson both left way too soon!

BTW, I definitely remember that album cover when I was a kid!

Back to the music, that bassline sounds much more typical of Jamerson.

The intro to that one reminds me of Right On by Marvin Gaye.

Scott Edwards was the other bass player on that album.

Ya really wanna hear some uncharacteristic Jamerson? Find a copy of Joan Baez' live album "From Every Stage". The band includes Jamerson, Jim Gordon (formerly of Delaney & Bonnie, and Derek & The Dominoes, before he killed is mother), and Larry Carlton.

+1 to Instant Coffey by Dennis Coffey.

Might be hard to find, well worth the trawl.

I Want You Back-Jackson Five, I think I have a John Lee Hooker album with Boom, Boom on it. I think James played upright on it. Then theres a Hugo Montenegro album from around 78 or so called Caravan.

I think if I were to hear Jamerson and Larry Carlton on the same track my head would explode.

That's such a great track (and bassline). Thanks!

I Want You Back is Wilton Felder, but it is very Jamerson influenced.

I agree it doesn't sound much like Jamerson. But it still has some of the stutter that he was so good at.

I wonder if it wasn't a matter of the master trying to imitate those who imitated him, in an ironic twist? Don't know.

God Bless, Ray

Hello.

In 1976 I played on an album by Donald Dyrd called Caricatures and Jamerson and I were the bass players on the album. The song you are talking about might be me rather than Jamerson. Hope this helps. here's a link also.
