+1. For Shiflett. I'd give Matt Freeman from Rancid a mention too. Not many punk players get recognition. Quote:

I'm speaking of a "true bassist,in every sense of the word."Just because he doesn't play fancy, fast licks that makes him look like he's jerkin' off, doesn't mean the man ain't no good."Why?Oh,why does he play the way he does then?"You ask.Because....He is a mature musician. That's why.Plain and simple. It's called,PLAYING WHAT THE SONG REQUIRES!!I've got a real sneaking suspicion that this man can play, and I do mean PLAY.I'm pretty damn sure he could really get busy in his band's songs,IF he would choose to do so.No,I'm not talking in the style of Wooten,Dickens,Jaco,Sheehan,or(insert favorite bassist here)___________.............(Brief pause)......
Sorry for the delay.Had to put on some flame retardant clothes.OK.I'm all buttoned up:
GENE $IMMONS=VERY,VERY UNDERRATED!!
Check this out,it just may change your way of thinking.Seriously.....Imagine the bass breaks in this tune with some slapping, tapping & all that jive.Wouldn't work,IMHO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCSVu...t=120&scat=229 |

Dave Hope - Kansas, Some of progressive rocks best, yet underated, bass lines. I still have a hard time pulling off some of his stuff.
Leland Sklar - Over 3000 recordings. Aways the perfect bass line. Check out this Wikipedia page...and this is just a partial discograpghy of the albums he has played on! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leland_Sklar |

Gene Simmons was the BEST part of KISS! Yeah...I said it! Anyone who doesn't think so needs to check out some: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94ghwMFNh74 (give the first vid a couple minutes to get the show started) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R36z4...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahbQW...eature=related
There's no reverb or effects or processing or any of that stuff to hide what these guys are doing. It's pretty easy to hear that KISS wasn't really all that good (or I should say "polished") live. IMO, Gene Simmons was easily the most musical and talented memeber of the group. Maybe you're right but I never thought of him as underrated. I've always thought that he was a really great Rock bassist and that most other people thought the same.

I agree about Gene Simmons, but Gene himself would be the first to say that we're all focusing too much on the bass around here (of course, that's why we're here. He's not. Unless that was your post? Gene?)
I still say it's me. All me.

In that same mold - John Illsley from Dire Straits. Perfect lines.
How 'bout Nick Seymore from Crowded House? Such a great melodic ear.
No one's yet mentioned Mike Rutherford from Genesis / Mike and the Mechanics. Outstanding bassist... and not a bad guitarist too. Bit of trivia on that. He was actually the rhythm guitarist in the early days of Genesis, but switched to bass once Steve Hackett came aboard.

| | | | +1 to everyone who said Dan Briggs, don't listen to metal that much, but love Between the Buried and Me and he is an essential part of that bands sound with his lines and countermelodies. Plus, Viridian is an amazing bass solo. |

A great musician. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
