Recently I have noticed that practicing was getting kind of boring and I have been feeling like I am stuck in a rut. Yesterday I actually got to talk to one of my favorite bassists that when I used to hear them on the radio or see them on tv made me want to play bass. After a long phone conversation practicing has been such a blast. Sometimes you just need some motivation. Anywayz have a good day just wanted to share my story with someone.

It's great that someone was able to say something to you that re-focused your energy. Not to unduly harsh your mellow, but nothing has really changed the underlying cause of your sense of boredom and lack of forward movement. At some point down the road, you're going to hit the same wall you ran into prior to your phone call.

And sure, you can call or type or talk in person to a variety of players whenever you run into the same feelings, but none of this really works on what is causing the actual feeling. The thing that helped me when I ran into that wall was finding a really great teacher. Joe was the guy who was able to get me to find inside myself, rather than looking outside, for energy and focus. He continues to help me learn ways to get deeper into music, to be a stronger player, to hear with more clarity and deeper nuance. There's too much stuff to work on for me to ever get bored, and (if I put the work in) I continually progress so I don't feel "stuck in a rut". Even on those days that everything's a drag, I have enough to work on that the mere act of putting my hand on the instrument gets me through the feeling.

Finding someone who can help you find your own path through the music is a pretty wonderful thing.

Yes...

"Go within, or go without."

Boredom is never caused by an external force. It's all you.

But it's cool that someone was able to talk you off the ledge...this time.

Then, most important would be to identify the external force you would identifying your boredom with. Could be that it's beyond your control for the moment, circumstances might be that you have to put up with whatever it is for a spell........then patience is your best friend. Patience is all yours for the making. And it isn't always easy to be patient!

First one needs to understand what boredom really is.

As my mother always said to me..."A person who is bored, is a boring person."

Boredom is a lack of interest. It isn't that you just don't feel like doing anything...your aren't interested in what you ARE already doing. So, find something else that does interest you. As Ed pointed out, you need to practice things that push you harder in one phase of your playing or another. Unless you have mastered all that is bass, being bored with it is impossible. Perhaps try playing new or different material. If you play rock, try figuring out bass lines to some classical music. Maybe take certain things you can play rather well, but not perfectly and work just on those things until they are perfected.

Maybe it's bass you are bored with. Play a different instrument then. Read a book, watch a movie, sleep with your girlfriend. Playing bass 24/7 can bore anyone. Find other hobbies and get away from bass for a little while. Buy some new gear. Sometimes a new piece of gear will create some excitement or change change the way you hear your bass.
