I've watched some mudvayne video clips on youtube both studio and live and although it isn't my type of music by far, I found myself enjoying the bass playing very much, in fact I think the guy rocks... hard! Especially "death blooms" live version. His Thumb bass has serious tone too. What's his reputation in the TB world?

| | | | I think his work on the first album was phenomenal. Still good on the newer ones, but some of the lines on that first album were crazy. Listen to the song severed, 1:43 in that songs is sweet.
I'll listen to alot of the jazz greats on bass and still go back to this guy with awe. |

He has a really strange technique, too. He "slaps" with his fingers.
Check out their DVD Live Dosage 50...it's got some really good footage of his playing.

Mudvayne has a bunch of (IMO) wasted talent.
Ryan Martine or Martini or something is a great bassist with a unique style
which is refreshing to see in today's glut of crappy metal bands.
Plus, that guy goes nuts on stage, wandering all over.
Great cover story on him on BP mag a few years back.
Transluscent blue goo.
edit---I guess the guy before me got his name.... |

Overall, I got the impression that their rhythm section was very impressive, but the guitarist and singer don't do much for me. |

Fantastic sounds... and the most amazing part... he does that while moving around!!

| | | | I'm a huge fan of Ryan's (especially since he's a mid-westerner). I originally wasn't a fan of Mudvayne when LD50 first came out. But with the later albums I started to realize how wrong I was. While it's incredibly gutteral, they've got some of the greatest technicality in Metal today.

Mudvayne deserve alot more than a 'toned down' version of Slipknot, for one their songs are quite a bit more complex Rhythmically and Matt does alot more than just fast drumming. Nothing against Joey, he's phenomenal but I think his drumming in slipknot is just a little overkill. But hey thats just me. Enough about Slipknot.
Ryan is very very awesome, and Mudvayne are slowly beginning to realise that he should be the focal point of the band. As their albums have progressed Ryan has been far more predomenant. He's very very cool as well..
On a side note I saw mudvayne at BDO last year... Increadible show! The fans chanted magic dirt off the stage before mudvayne, they're nuts. And Mudvayne absolutely ripped it up, increadible! |

The first time I saw their video I thought "did this guy listen to Doug Wimbish?" because that wierd slap technique of his is very similar to Wimbish. I read up on him and he's the same age as me AND he listed Muzz Skillings and Doug Wimbish, both from Living Colour as two of his favorite bass players (two of my favorites too!).
The drummer is great too. The guitarist is pretty bad. I would like to hear Ryan outside of a metal situation.

For example, imagine him playing with System of a down which is a more creative band in melody and harmony.

He's a classically trained Vocalist too, which can go a very long way in many many forms of music. Lets just hope all the money he makes from Mudvayne gets channeled into some good creative projects later on.
Anyone that would call him crap for talent has never seen the man work his magic. His lines are so complex, especially for the music he participates in.
