Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. With a massive 42 percent of your votes, nearly 11,000 people have handed the accolade of 'greatest bassist of all time' to Dream Theater's John Myung. |

Upon viewing the list, I'd guess the readers of that sight are very young and very metal focused...

And I love Jack Bruce and John Paul Jones, but I dont think they are top 10. |

Everybody has an opinion and there is a set for every butt in this world, but these guys that I mentioned could all have been in the top 10. a lot of guitar players must have voted. |

I hope you folks realize that these things don't mean anything. However at least they had the gumption to tell us that Jamerson should've been higher on the list.

OR >stop it,or I'll put on Dream Theater for a whole day on 120db's....NOW that's punishment... |

| | | | These "reader"polls tend to take only popularity into account generally by non bass players or even non musicians. There is no real criteria in these opinions...thus they should always be referenced as FAVORITE bassists...not "greatest" bassist when using no corresponding objective criteria. |

I mean, putting someone as "the best" in anything artistic(and not just the music),is absolutely WRONG.first of all,it's a matter of taste, and second, and more important,HOW do you choose, say, the best bass player? the one who can play anything? sold most records? can play 20 notes per second?
does something no one else can? has the biggest pedalboard?(incidently, the drummer from the Dream Theater has all THAT,but, does he need all of that?that doesn't stop him from being the most/best...well..fill in) can play Jaco's solos note-for-note? I mean,really.... |

Influence
Innovation
Versatility
Technical Skill
Etc
And a system to evaluate (and debate) the relative merits of each player in those criteria standards against one another. This is what we attempted to do at digitaldreamdoor.com | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
