The 25 greatest bassists of all time | Page 25 | MusicRadar.com

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. With a massive 42 percent of your votes, nearly 11,000 people have handed the accolade of 'greatest bassist of all time' to Dream Theater's John Myung.

That's a bit of a stretch, and I really dig Myung's playing.

Upon viewing the list, I'd guess the readers of that sight are very young and very metal focused...

I was surprised to see Slipknot's bassist in the top 10. i think the rest of the top 10 are right, just not in that order, if you switch out slipknot's bassist with Jamerson. And I love Jack Bruce and John Paul Jones, but I dont think they are top 10.

No Dunn, no Gospel players at all, NO ROCCO!!!! No Chuck Rainey, no George Porter, Jr, Stanley Clarke, Oteil, etc... I can think of probably 20 cats I'd put on that list and 20 I'd take off...

No Duck Dunn? No Joe Osborn? No Wille Weeks? No Pino? No Jerry Schef? No Stanley, No Rainey (Aja alone puts him on the list)? No Berry Oakley (7/8 time Whipping Post)? No Willie Dixon?

Everybody has an opinion and there is a set for every butt in this world, but these guys that I mentioned could all have been in the top 10. a lot of guitar players must have voted.

Look at all those metal heads voting in online polls.

I hope you folks realize that these things don't mean anything. However at least they had the gumption to tell us that Jamerson should've been higher on the list.

No disrespect meant to Paul Gray, but I don't think half of his fans could pick out a single bass line of his from a Slipknot song.

it doesnt say how the poll was taken. it may have been a multiple choice question. put the poll on the dream theatre fan site, and presto ! i guess no one put it on stanley clarkes website slipknot?

dude....I thought Dream Theater is the band you use to frighten kids with....you know> keep up with that attitude and you'll end up playing in Dream Theater, the worst, and totally pointless,look-at-me-ruling-and-no-emotions-whatsoever music band...
OR >stop it,or I'll put on Dream Theater for a whole day on 120db's....NOW that's punishment...

These "reader"polls tend to take only popularity into account generally by non bass players or even non musicians. There is no real criteria in these opinions...thus they should always be referenced as FAVORITE bassists...not "greatest" bassist when using no corresponding objective criteria.

totally agree on this one!
I mean, putting someone as "the best" in anything artistic(and not just the music),is absolutely WRONG.first of all,it's a matter of taste, and second, and more important,HOW do you choose, say, the best bass player? the one who can play anything? sold most records? can play 20 notes per second?
does something no one else can? has the biggest pedalboard?(incidently, the drummer from the Dream Theater has all THAT,but, does he need all of that?that doesn't stop him from being the most/best...well..fill in) can play Jaco's solos note-for-note? I mean,really....

11,000 isn't really a very big poll base considering how many music fans are in the world.

Objective criteria would include factors such as...
Influence
Innovation
Versatility
Technical Skill
Etc

And a system to evaluate (and debate) the relative merits of each player in those criteria standards against one another. This is what we attempted to do at digitaldreamdoor.com
