Musician's offspring turned bassist.

Sign in to disble this ad
A friend came to me with an interesting idea. He imagined forming a band of current musicians who are offspring (or otherwise blood related) to former/current musicians who made a name in their own right. For example, John Bonham's son Jason plays drums, etc. Sort of like a "second generation band." Other than Wolfgang Van Halen, neither he nor I could think of a current bassist that fits this criterion. Any ideas???

Berry Oakley Jr. is a great bass player. Also James Jamerson jr.

Sounds like the band Bloodline: Berry Oakley Jr, Erin (Miles) Davis, Waylon (Bobby) Krieger, and Joe Bonamassa.

Flea's parents were jazz musicians if I remember correctly; does that count?

Larry Carlton -> Travis Carlton. They frequently play together and or with the same artists.

Is Damian Erskine (bassist) the son of Peter Erskine (drums)?

Derek Trucks's dad isn't a famous musician, his uncle Butch is maybe who you were thinking about. Matthew Garrison's dad was Jimmy Garrison, bass player with John Coltrane, both are fantastic bass players.

Don Cherry > Nenah and Eagle Eye Cherry.
Ravi Shankar > Norah Jones.

And don't forget that Shooter's mom is Jesi Coulter, so he gets double the music genes.

Peter is my uncle, actually (common mistake). Peter is my mom's brother. I've always used my moms name because my parents got divorced when I was 2 & I've never known him or anyone on that side of the family...only the Erskine side.
