Sign in to disble this ad
I made a post like this one a couple of months ago but seems like I can't find the thread so I'm making a new one..

So here's the deal.. I will try to post my progress everyday so you guys can kick my *** if I didn't practice or w.e.

I wanna join the military band so pretty much I wanna push myself to the limit (practicing 8hrs a day or even more)..

I'm now practicing this stuffs..

Quote:
I. Scales
  • Major & Minor Scales
  • 7th Scales

II. Scale Exercises(Dexterity)
  • Groups of 3
  • Groups of 4
  • 3rds
  • Arpeggios
III. Chords and Modes

IV. Reading

V. Constructing a Bass Line
So guys.! I need your help so I can make through the band and also I got a teacher too that visits me every Tuesday but the more the merrier right.?

I think this would be the most appropriate section.. If not, mods please move it.?

Sounds like you are pretty motivated - right on. I wish I could apply that kind of discipline.

My only comment would be not to overdue it on 8 hours a day of practice - there is only so much your brain can process. but whatever you can handle without getting fatigued should be cool.

Good for you doing all this btw, I'm looking forward to seeing the progression you're gonna make. Might be intresting to see what your learning curve is and maybe get a more efficient practicing method out of it. If not, it'll hopefully be a fun read at least

At the same time, I want to caution you to not overdo it, you don't want to frustratedly throw you bass against a wall and quit completely in a month or three. I'm not saying that's gonna happen to you - you know yourself better that anyone here - but that is what would happen to me if I would keep myself to a strict regimen of practicing 8 hours a day.

Generally speaking, I believe one should not aim for results, but aim for the process. Losing weight mostly doesn't happen (or doesn't last anyway) for people who want to simply lose weight. But it does happen for people who want to do more sports and eat healthier and less. See what I mean? In the case of musical prowess, I believe one should play their instrument as much as they want to, be that 30 minutes once a week, or 8 hours every day. The results will be according to what you do, sure, but you'll have fun the whole time. And isn't that what it's all about?

IMO and such. I don't want to put you off this project or anything.

I actually can play scales the whole 8 hours w/o getting crazy or anything.. I love playing scales, I love listening to music I produce.. I know it sounds crazy but I do..

I know 8hrs a day sounds too much but when I'm playing music time goes by quite easy.. Try it you will experience what I'm saying..

Sounds like you're pretty motivated already & don't need much pushing!

About all I can suggest is to research the Military band's repertoire & add that into the regime. That ought to give a bit of variety.

Pete.

Oh I've experienced that lots of times. Just not for a full eight hour stretch. And not daily. If you really can make that happen for yourself you are a lucky man and I envy you. By all means, go for it then!

Andah... When you get famous, remember your old buddy Drogo, willya?

Not sure what you mean by a tight bassline. If I'm going to venture a guess it's timing and meter you're after. When I was coming up my teacher had me use a metronome whenever I was at a lesson or practicing. Running one scale root to octave and back to the root in a circle of 5ths up and down the neck making sure there was a note at every click. We also did an exercize where on the E string you would strike on the 1 & 4 and rest on 2 & 3 or everyother beat you hit and rest hit and rest or whatever combo the lesson entailed. Really helped me be a much more solid player.
