My brother just posed a perplexing conundrum.

My younger brother (guitard in training) just asked me "What would you say to someone if they said that the only difference between bass and guitar is that one plays dark and one plays light?" That's kind of a weird question, I don't know what I'd say. How would any of you respond to that?

Conundrum? That's why he's playing guitar.

I'd say to them they don't know what they're talking about. Either that or to perhaps explain what they mean - people have weird ways of communicating sometimes (myself included).

I would say awesome because everyone knows that the sith have always been cooler than the Jedi anyways. Well with the exception of Yoda, and maybe Mace Windu (that purple lightsaber is pretty gangster), and also maybe that one Tweelek chick because she was kind of cute, and Qui Gon because his just awesome, or Obi Wan for that matter because- Hold on what was I talking about?

That's actually a really interesting way to look at the relationship of the two. Not always true yeah, but in a lot of cases, I think this makes an interesting point.

I think Yoda means the Jedi win hands down in the coolness stakes.

Ask him if he ever heard of an obscure guitarist named Les Paul? On many, many recordings he did everything on his guitar. Lead, rythm, percussion and the bass line!

I wouldn't say anything. I'd look like this...

Then I'd ask them if they liked Tang. If so, I'd offer to go get some. When I got back, I'd look like this while drinking Tang...

And the fact that that actually perplexed you made me look like this...

Yes, it would warrant that strong a response.

The only difference between an orange and a banana is that an orange is round orange and orange tasting, and a banana isn't.

The ONLY difference?

I'd ask him if those orbs on the front of his face actually worked or if they were just there for decoration.

That's one of many possible differences. And his statement as it stands, is simply not true. So the answer to the question "What would you say to someone if they said that the only difference between bass and guitar is that one plays dark and one plays light?" is quite simple - and that answer is; "That's not a true statement."
