my 12 yr old rockin out on daddy's bass. She is undecided now if she wants to play bass or not. I was going to get her one for her 13th birthday but now its not for certain.

Get her an SX for her birthday: if she doesn't play it, mod the crap out of it and groove on! I can only hope that when I have kids, far down the road (I'm only 18!), that they want to play some instrument, whatever it may be.

By that time I was determined to be a bassist for life. I know all people are different, but a lot of people that I know who got a guitar for their birthday got bored with it too easily, and quit.
But like the previous poster said, get a bass that you could use if she won't. |

| | | | Looks like you have a great bass and a great daughter. Spend some time with the two of them together, and soon you will have the answer you seek. It could be that she just wants your attention. However, she may be a budding genius. IIRC you only have a couple of years before her interest change, so grab this chance while you can.

Youngest of my four kids (Hollywars on this forum) plays bass.
I am most proud of him, but other than showing him how to tune, and supplying him with gear, I have never instructed him. He plays well because of that, rather than despite it.
All the best to both of you.

| | | | Maybe she wants to play another instrument? I went through several before I found bass, and it just clicked. I knew it was MY instrument. Not violin, not guitar, not trombone. Ask her if there's another instrument she'd be interested in. Unless, of course, bass is her number one.

Just don't push something on her so that she is not discouraged.
That being said, kudos to you for teaching her and showing her. My biggest regret is that I did not ask my dad to show me or teach me how to play guitar when I was young. |

I second the SX route.
Youngest son started on a repaired bass(I'd bought it for parts) and he wanted a "bass to practice on". This grew from Jr High to being in the marching & jazz bands on bass.
Enjoy it all as it goes quite fast.

My Daughter now (14) started learning/playing guitar a couple of years back. Problem being for me was that she is a lefty and had problems using my guitars even if I strung them the other way.
Knowing myself how crap and unrewarding it was starting out with bad gear I went and got her a decentish accoustic for her Birthday and then an electric last Christmas.
I leave her to it, she jams along with a load of stuff on youtube and even manages to get some tricky solo tabs rolled off.
I think she has a bit more musical talent than me (not difficult lol). I catch her from time2time picking up one of my basses
I just hope she keeps it up and gets as much joy from playing as I have over the years. Hopefully a hobby for life |

| | | | i only see my 13 year old daughter a few times a year. she was with me during spring break for two weeks and while she was here, on a whim i showed her how to play a few of her fave songs on bass- you shoulda seen the lightbulb go off in her head!
she had no musical knowledge before, but she really took to it naturally and now that she is back home, all she wants is a bass.
she is a natural and i wouldn't have guessed it.
there is something so cool about a gal playing bass.
for once i was able to show her something that her mom couldn't...
