My idea of the perfect tone

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but this has to be my idea of the perfect bass tone:

I get the fuzz in there, but I wish my bottom was that clean and not muddy.

Um, that didn't come out right, but I think you know what I mean.

I must admit the thumb thing freaks me out a bit.

Just pick up The Real Thing or Angel Dust from Faith No More. Ultimate tone.

"Ultimate tone" to me is Jack Casady on Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of creation". A real thrill ride....

I doubt anyone got more sound out of a set of strings than Entwistle. Just the way he struck the strings with his fingertips, like the hammers hitting the stings in a piano, lets them ring out so loud and clear it's uncanny.

Real pity most Who recordings didn't do his tone justice.

I'm still chasing the tone he got on those isolated live recordings.

That is a great tone. Some of my personal tone favorites from other artists that I would love to have are:

Geddy Lee (especially on Snakes and Arrows), Cliff Burton, John Entwistle, Mike Watt, Lemmy, Mike Dirnt (on Dookie not new Green Day), and Paul Simonon.

My favorite distortion-laced tone. No idea what studio trickery they used to achieve it.

you dont need studio to get distortion on a bass.. just get a distortion pedal.. i have a friend that plays her bass through a raven halfstack with a distortion pedal.. it has a great tone.. just not somethin i want... or a good idea would be to grab a guitar amp head with say 80 watts and hook up with that.. the limited head room would cause some distortion....

and cliff burton? i prefer robert trujillo...

Thing is, to me the bass on the record sounds like it's composed of multiple channels/tracks. Maybe Kim used a clean and a dirty amp at the same time, each of which was miced and then mixed differently.
