One day, one my daughters was riding with me while I was playing a Marcus Miller CD. My daughter asked me, "are you better than him?" I said, "no he is one of the best in the world." She said, "you sound like him when you play." I was honest and said that I just sit around and play a lot of his songs. A few days later, my smallest daughter was with me in a music store while I checked out a bass. She said, "You're playing that Marcus Miller stuff!" Finally, today I was playing Peter Muller, and they said, "Great! Marcus Miller!"
It's funny that Bernard Edwards is my avatar, and I personally think that Anthony Jackson is the greatest actual bassist in the world ( although MM is a way better song writer, producer, etc.)
The bottom line is that when I am just fooling around, I love to play MM slap licks, and that's what my kids remember.

And it's always cool when kids notice things like the OP writes about. My 5 yr old granddaughter will always sit in the den with me when I'm playing my bass, and I was playing the mellow parts from Iron Maiden's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. A few days later I was watching the DVD when that same part of the song came on. She was busy playing with her toys, but suddenly perked up and said, "Hey, that's Grandpa's song!". Gotta admit, that made my day!

| | | That reminds me (semi-off topic): about a year ago, I was playing a Buckethead CD when my daughter came over for a visit. I was sitting on the couch when she entered and she gave me the strangest look . . . then she said, "oh, that's a CD playing, I thought that was you practicing."

Significant others can be pretty tough critics, sometimes...
I say you should keep this in mind when their birthdays come around. |

My 13 year old daughter walked in and said "you could be in his band!". I said really? you think so? She said "yeah, You play that stuff all the time and sound just like the record". I thought to myself... yeah, I guess could!
